Florida City Council Considers Bill That Would Tell Residents How to Park in Their Own Driveways

The city council in Jacksonville, Florida, is considering a bill that would make it a violation of city code for residents to back their vehicles into their driveways if their license plates cannot be seen from the street.

According to the text of the bill, the new proposed ordinance would prohibit the “improper storage of vehicles” to reduce the “visual blight” of neighborhoods. It is also aimed to regulate “potentially hazardous conditions” on private property.

Supporters say the ordinance is needed in order for officers to issue citations for abandoned vehicles, the Florida Times-Union reported.

Currently, if a vehicle doesn’t have a license plate or has a license plate that has expired, police don’t necessarily know it if the owner has parked the vehicle with the tag facing away from the street. And because the vehicles are on private property, officers are limited to what they can see from the street.

The bill, filed by city councilman Warren Jones, states that if a vehicle’s tag isn’t visible from the street, the owner must legibly display the tag number using characters “not less than two inches in height” so that it can be seen from the street.

In addition, motorists who choose to cover their vehicles would have to either keep their tag number visible or post the information in a place that is visible.

“We have been trying to find a way to address this problem because it’s a blight on the community and it’s driving down property values and it’s very unsightly,” Jones told WJXT.

The bill is being driven to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles but it would also restrict residents from storing “materials, equipment, furnishings, furniture, appliances, construction materials or any other items which are not designed to be used outdoors.”

The proposal has drawn criticism from some residents.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” Dave Bryant said. The main reason I do it is people parallel park on the side of the street, so if you are backing out, you can’t see traffic coming.”

Kristyn Irwin has the same concern as Bryant.

“I can see where it could make it easier to find something if you needed to locate a vehicle for whatever reason, but I really like being able to park like that and not having to worry about backing into someone on the street,” Irwin told WJXT.

So far, two city council committees have approved the bill. It will likely be voted on by the entire council later this summer. The Jacksonville mayor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TheBlaze.

If the ordinance is passed, homeowners who do not comply could face fines of up to $50.

I went Galt in 2009.

Where I live now, I pay No property taxes…

No permits of any kind to build whatsoever I choose, how I choose, where I choose.

There is No inspections, inspectors, HOA’s, or government intrusion of any kind. No EPA, No Corps of Engineers and No license plate scanning Revenue enforcement… Nothing at all to hinder or hassle me!

Life is Good!

Did I leave America? No!

I relocated to my Wife’s Tribal Reservation!

Instead of the three bogus reasons given in paragraph two, why don’t they just say the purpose of the ordinance is “economy of LEO time” or something similar.
IOW, the cops don’t want to heft their body armor & donut-raddled, sweating buttocks out of the air conditioned cruiser to walk up driveways around to the front of the vehicles.

this sounds like something New Jersey would pass

Eastern Pennsylvania is no longer the option New Jerseyians are taking to escape tax hell... because those that fled already dragged the disease across the Delaware with them. Now all these retiring NJ Jews head to the tax-haven of FL, establish trust funds for their kids and are Jerseying up the place real nice.

Kid dinged up the front end of the car once...and drove it without water. I took the motor to the machine shop and parked the car with the wrecked side facing away from the street. It was a beautiful car, and I didnt think it would bother anyone stting there. Apparently a neighbor complained and I got a letter. I called the city.

Me: Whats wrong with my car in the driveway?

City: Its inoperable and thats a fire hazard.

Me: I dont have anywhere else to put it

City: Put it in your garage

Me: But you said it was a fire hazard

City: Not in your garage

I moved out of the city shortly after that.

A city around here tried a similar thing a few years back with an ordinance saying homeowners could park on their driveways only. Parking on their lawns was punishable by a fine. It didn’t go over so well.

“Supporters say the ordinance is needed in order for officers to issue citations for abandoned vehicles...”

If the vehicle is on the owner’s private property, then by definition, it isn’t abandoned.

It didn’t go over so well.

I have long advocated that all government officeholders and employees should present themselves annually for whacking with a 2x4

The house # is not sufficient. They need to see the plate numbers to identify who owns it and if money's owed some agency. Everyone and everything has a number. They need our numbers. And when they go to court they'll want more numbers in addition to cash. Checks and credit cards are accepted too! ☺

(((And when they go to court they’ll want more numbers in addition to cash.))))

I know a guy that has got into trouble with the boys in blue. He has a PD because he cannot afford to hire his own mouthpiece and it costs him 10 bucks every time he calls him. He also has to pay for his meals and sundries. And there is no work program available so that he could make anything to pay for these things.

I’m starting to think these regulations are in place so that pressure can be applied to those who do not assimilate.

Amazing. So it's the other folks who live outside the reservations who are on government's land?

Better not tell many people that outside the reservation, millions will want to move there. Take care.

That's why they want this.

No, it is all about tracking people. Who is associating with who, who can be blackmailed into compliance.

Right. The violation $ is just a bonus. They want the vehicle data. Get more data than what they can dial up on the house. Get the visitors #’s too. It’s all going to be tied in. If you owe taxes, fines, fees, assessments, judgments, anything, they’ll know it and more when they run the numbers.
