Microsoft U-turns on 'free' Windows 10 upgrade promise for ALL previewers

Microsoft backtracks blog post containing apparent "Free" Windows 10 upgrade promise for all preview testers

Microsoft has been forced to quietly edit a misleading blog post that seemed to suggest that anyone could get their mitts on Windows 10 for free – if they first installed a test version of Redmond's upcoming operating system for PCs.

The only caveat appeared to be that folk had to use a Microsoft Account (MSA) that's connected to the firm's Windows Insider program.

Microsoft had said that a freebie upgrade would then be applied for anyone who has installed its latest Windows 10 preview (build 10130). And that promise seemed to stand even for users who didn't have Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 previously installed on their PCs.

Windows boss Gabe Aul had said in a blog post on Friday:

Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on 29 July ...

As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated.

Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.

However, that apparent slip of the tongue (use of the word "activated") has now been removed from the post.

And Aul has since added this clarification: "It’s important to note that only people running Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 as part of the free upgrade offer."

In a sense this is not new news, it’s just reverting back to what we knew to be the case until the misleading blog post.

What apps that I have used for the past 7 years won’t work with 10? How much space/gigs does 10 use? How much RAM? How long can I use 7? What crappy nonsense do I have to put up with 10 that was keeping 8 from being used?

I’m the grey and white one in the back!

Seriously, I do have an MSDN subscription, so when the time comes I’ll use it.

Remember, trying out an early build like this can be risky. That’s why we recommend that you don’t install the preview on your primary home or business PC. Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything.

If you want to stop using Windows 10 Insider Preview and return to your previous version of Windows, you’ll need to reinstall your previous version from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC—typically a DVD. If you don’t have recovery media, you might be able to create recovery media from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. You’ll need to do this before you upgrade. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more info.

After you install Windows 10 Insider Preview, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

> How long can I use 7?

Windows 7 hit end of "Mainstream Support" which is "new feature support" back in January 2015. That means no new feature will be added, but existing ones will be supported through end of "Extended Support" which is to say, end-of-life.

Security updates will be available through end-of-life.

End of life -- end of Extended Support -- is in January 2020.

So if you want to keep running Windows 7 you're good for another four and a half years.

True.

Well, strictly speaking, one -can-, but it's kinda dumb. Some people do. :-)

'Course, it depends on whether the free thing is what you want. I once knew a girl who, as they say, couldn't even give it away...

Nah, they just made a stupid error in vetting a comment made in a blog post. Hardly a new thing on the Internet. I daresay Apple has made a similar faux pas in the past. :-)

> You know, Linux is free to everyone, and always has been. I’m just sayin’...

One of the reasons I love running Linux.

Microsoft doesn't intend for Windows 10 to remain free for more than a year (although updates for the early adopters will allegedly remain free forever).

But they absolutely HAVE to make Windows 10 an adoption success. Vista's utter failure caused XP to survive long past its time. Win7 has been a screaming success, and Win8 was a flaming disaster in terms of adoption rates (it only surpassed XP a month or two ago).

The only way in creation that MS will get Win10 to surpass Win7 is to give it away. Period. And they know it.

Windows 10 is free (for now) because Microsoft's leaders are realistic pragmatists, who recognize they have no other choice.

Linux is free for a very different reason -- Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman are brilliant visionaries, who recognize the intrinsic value of free/open software.

They're also Socialists, which has an effect on their choices as well. :-)

I have an icon that showed up on my computer giving me the opportunity for a free Windows 10 upgrade. “How to get a free windows 10”. Says it is worth $119 and will be available and a notification will be given after July 29 to download.
