We’ve been killing the planet for 400,000 years. Why won’t it just die already?

Earth’s got more lives than a cat, Freddy Kreuger, or James Bond put together. Perhaps, we just have to admit we can’t kill the planet because it’s stronger than us so let’s stop worrying going forward.

My pleasure. You are always a gentleman and a scholar.

And, may I add, an asset to the forum.

I think you should write a book will all your compilations and some poster comments; it would be better than Bill Bryson’s *...History of Everything*.

[Suggested title: *Theories of Everything Explained*]...I see it’s bindun. ;(

You rock!

I suspect that 400,000 was meant as “around,” not “exactly” that time period. If you read the article which you can click to where it says Read more ....., then you will have most of your questions answered. Paleontologists are thoroughly trained to differentiate teeth from various animals and species of hominids. If you are really curious you could Google the names of the authors or researchers and find where they have published. Then you could go to a library or Google the published article and get the minute details.

so the charcoal was probably *in* the food. :”)

They didn't have a 'timer', so probably some of the food became charcoal.

I've had roasted marshmellows that were mostly charcoal and ash.

One thing I do know for sure... dental tartar doesn't come from pollution.

The issue is the dating, how it was arrived at, and why is it valid. No one wants to answer those questions. That is the issue, not insulting everyone they do not know “has never cracked a book.” What a joke. These guys say this, post silly vidios, and expect to be taken seriously? Address the issue, don’t waste your time evading it.

When you say “no one wants to answer those questions, do you mean commentors at FR or the authors of the article. If you are referring to FReepers, then they probably do not have the answers to your questions without knowing which of several possible means were used to provide the date. I went back to the article and at the bottom is a link to the Abstract: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1040618215004553
There are also links to the publication where the more scientific article will appear and the sponsoring university. The technical article is still in prepublication and proofing so the date of publication is not yet known. The article here is meant to make people aware of new findings, not answer a lot of technical questions which will appear in the Scientific Journals. You have to read the journal articles to try to get those answers.

So Neanderthals were making fires 400,000 years ago, but we’re still expected to believe that they were all stupid back then and had no ability for abstract thought?

No.

Neanderthals believed that their God was all powerful and that their ancestors were wise. Neanderthals hunted, and built, and raised their children to be smart and survive.

Indians (natives) in the Americas were similar. Both were wise.

Now, modern civilization believes in the Easter Bunny, that the Universe was an accident, that their ancestors were idiots, and raise their children to be the same.

As further proof that modern humans are the stupid ones, there are many places on the earth that contain architecture which we cannot duplicate today, nor even explain how they were accomplished.

My favorite living crank, John Anthony West, said it best, that the paradigm is that there’s been a linear progression “from stupid cave men, to smart old us, with our hydrogen bombs and striped toothpaste.”
