Those old houses were beautiful, shame they turned into hellholes and then bulldozed. B-(

Yeah, IIRC, Heathkit had a couple of portable 2 and 6 meter transceivers, the “Two’er” and “Six’er” that were called “Benton Harbor Lunchboxes” since they resembled a lunchbox.

I was born and raised in Detroit. Left at age 17 to enlist in 1960. Haven’t been back much since. It was a good place to grow up then. I learned this very day that my home town was once known as “The Paris of the Midwest.”

Yes, I remember those but never owned one.

I had an SB-102, purchased for me by my father when I was a junior in high school. Took me about three months to build. Worked after a little tweaking by an electrical engineer who was also a ham (I think I didn't complete the receiver front-end alignment correctly).

It was a very nice rig with high receiver sensitivity, although not nearly as nice as the beautiful Collins KWM-2 model, of which the SB-102 was but a pale imitation.

Really! I’ll have to see Gran Torino! We left Highland Park when I was four years old, so this will be my first good look at it. We moved to Detroit.

They put us in the middle of the pack. Northfield Township is 188th.

Looking at the list. Some of it is spot on and some of it is crap. Grayling at 20 was laughable unless you're including barfights at Spike's as major crime. I grew up between Roscommon and Grayling. There's not a ton of money there and more drugs than people think, but you're not likely to get robbed, nor jumped. Mackinac Island at 24 was even more laughable. Saginaw was 25 and probably should be top 5, if not number 1.

I wouldn't put Jackson in the top 10 ahead of Mt Morris, Inkster, Ypsilanti, Ecorse, River Rouge, Buena Vista, Kalamazoo, River Rouge, or Pontiac. I'd compare it to Lansing where I once lived, although Lansing probably a little rougher.

I haven’t been to Muskegon in ages. Muskegon itself I think is hit and miss. Muskegon Heights is like Benton Harbor.
