Parents Charged with 'Neglect' After 11-Year-Old Plays in Yard for 90 Minutes

Two Florida parents were hit with felony neglect charges after their 11-year-old son was reportedly playing alone in the backyard for an hour and a half.

According to his mother, the boy arrived home before his parents and was locked out of the house, so he shot some hoops in the yard until they arrived.

A neighbor saw the child outside alone and called the local police. When his mother and father arrived home, they were met by a police officer, who arrested them for child negligence.

Robert Bianchi and Steve Raiser joined Clayton Morris on "Fox and Friends Weekend" to debate whether these charges are excessive.

"He didn't know where his parents were. He was locked out of his house. And he didn't have access to emergency services, shelter, food, things like that," Bianchi said.

Raiser countered that there was no danger from the neglect and felony charges may actually cause more damage in this case.

At 11 years old I was a Hobart engineer at a fine dining restaurant earning a paycheck. Talk about parental neglect.

I looked up an interesting tidbit- the American Red Cross provides a babysitting training course for kids starting at 11 years old. (http://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/program-highlights/babysitting-caregiving)

So we live in a world where 11 year-olds are thought to be responsible enough to be able to care for infants and younger children after taking an online course, but are not responsible enough to shoot hoops on his own outside his own home for 90 minutes.

Soemthing just doesn’t add up.

"I am shocked that the cops even took this call seriously."

My thought as well. Checking on the kid is one thing but arresting the parents for felony negligence? Give me a break.

Reminds me of the time when I lived in a townhouse complex in Arizona. The streets were narrow and corners tight. One day a policeman showed up at my front door saying that a woman in the complex had complained that my truck had come too close to her car and almost hit her vehicle. I looked at him with a quizzical look for a moment and asked if there was a collision or any damage. He said, well no, but that he was just following up on the complaint. I asked him if there wasn't a collision or a crime involved, why was he even at my door? He hesitated for a second and then laughed and told me I was right. He apologized for bothering me and left without further ado.

And how about the news last week that Bill took money from Sweden to lift sanctions on Iran? Hey, it’s only Iran. And of course, no indictments or arrests.

And meanwhile I’m reading about parents getting arrested and charged with a felony because their 11 year old was playing basketball in the backyard.

I was talking about this today with my brother, he says look how the laws are run today for the average citizen. If you break even the smallest, tiniest law, the government comes at you full force, throwing everything they got at you to make you life as miserable as possible.

One example is cars. Here in New york if you are late paying a moving violation ticket they suspend your license, and a lot of times they don’t tell you. So if you are driving in Manhattan and you want to pass a cop car that is double parked on downtown Broadway, the only way to get around the cop car is to drive in the bus lane. But that is illegal and it gets you a moving violation ticket. So you have two choices: Wait forever for the cop to move his car or drive around him in the bus lane. Now buses come maybe every 15-20 minutes, it’s a total scam to steal peoples money this bus lane law. But it gets better: If you get the ticket and you plead guilty or go to court and are found guilty you have something like 2 weeks to pay which a lot of people miss. And as a result they do not pay in time. And then their license is suspended without them knowing. And guess what happens next if they are caught driving? They are arrested and sent to jail!

That happened to two friend of mine. And then I look at the Clintons breaking law after law after law after law after law making tens of millions of dollars and I have to say to myself: We live under an Oligarchy, it’s no longer a constitutional republic. The privileged few do whatever the hell they want, when they want, they make up any laws or policies they want without showing the public as if they are adults and we are children and nobody does anything about it. I do not believe we have valid elections in this country anymore. The Oligarchy controls them. Nobody is ever going to convince me far leftist wackos are the majority in this country. That Hillary fans outnumber sane people, no way. What’s going to happen is it’s going to get more and more oppressive until rational people can’t take it anymore and revolution is going to break out. People think riots are bad? Wait till a nationwide revolt breaks out.

At 11ish, I probably spent a dozen late afternoons sitting on my front steps reading or doing homework, because my mother left the house and, probably unexpectedly, didn’t get back before me.

Of course, this was a small town where we actually knew our neighbours, who, if the need had arisen, probably would have helped me out rather than try to get my parents arrested.

I agree though I have to with that say there's a great many people today who act like children as irresponsible nit wits and then some.

We complain about restrictions, but then we also need to see that often those restrictions are put into place because people are generally out for themselves today, they do not show not do they care to the “normal” considerations once practiced and appreciated.

If this were the standard when I was growing up my wonderful parents would be in the slammer.
