Women Are Not Capable Of Understanding 'Goodfellas'
New York Post ^ | June 10, 2015 | Kyle Smith

The first time I saw “GoodFellas,” on a rented Blockbuster videotape in 1991, I was in a daze as the final credits rolled. If I had been a cartoon character, I would have had stars dancing around my head like Wile E. Coyote. I turned to my girlfriend and said, “What’d you think?” “Boy movie,” she declared — and I knew our relationship was doomed. Just kidding. (We split up because I was a jerk.) But women don’t get “GoodFellas.” It’s not really a crime drama, like “The Godfather.” It’s more of a male fantasy picture — “Entourage” with guns instead of swimming pools, the Rat Pack minus tuxedos.

“GoodFellas,” which starting next week will have a 25th anniversary showing at the Film Forum on Houston Street, and whose 25th anniversary Blu-ray DVD just hit the streets, takes place in a world guys dream about. Way down deep in the reptile brain, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy the Gent (Robert De Niro) and Tommy (Joe Pesci) are exactly what guys want to be: lazy but powerful, deadly but funny, tough, unsentimental and devoted above all to their brothers — a small group of guys who will always have your back. Women sense that they are irrelevant to this fantasy, and it bothers them.

I loved it. That and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ (What a ‘feel good’ movie!) are among my very favorites.

I love gangster movies based on real life, but they sure as hell don’t make me want to become a criminal. I’ve yet to see one where I thought, wow, I want in on all that prison and shooting and stabbing.

Henry Hill, Jimmy the Gent, and Tommy are exactly the kind of psychopaths I would immediately remove from the vicinity of my family. Shoot, shovel, and shut up.

I’ve often noticed that there are no gangsters grabbing their balls in public out here in the country.

If I’m clicking through the Channels and it’s on, I always stop and watch it.

Same thing goes for The Godfather, The Outlaw Josie Wales and Patton.

I just can’t help myself.

As an aside, our Family has a Crypt in the same New York Catholic Cemetery as the Gotti Clan. Oh those Italians...

My Grandfather had it custom built with Italian Marble back in the 50’s. It has room for Eighteen Bodies. Only my Great Grandparents are in there. Nobody else wants to be Buried there. It kind of creeps everyone out. LOL

I’m a woman and love that movie! My husband won’t watch it with me. :)

Ray Liotta is a treasure. He was great in Blow, too. There’s just something world-weary yet sweet about him.

I view Scarface as an 80’s buddy comedy and it works out well for me.

I don't get the premise of this title.

Wasn't Pesci playing Hillary?

Miller’s Crossing was great. John Polito stole that movie.

Great character actor. He was also great in the pilot episode of Crime Story.

“Always the high hat!”

The period dialogue was priceless. I can remember my grand parents talking like that. My grandfather was a NYC cop from 1928 to 1948.

Women don’t get it?

It used to be one of my favorite movies.

My favorite part was the day he was trying to get dinner cooked, fence some guns and arrange Lois’ flight to Pittsburgh.

“It’s my lucky hat. I never fly without it!”

It really did make those people look like scum.

Anybody else get a cold chill when the boss told Karen he had some designer swag in that creepy dark warehouse?

In my younger days, I was considered a “tough guy” by some of my old posse. But if I were ever sitting in a bar and a guy like Joe Pesci’s character sat on a atool near me, I’d gather up my bar change and keys and decamp toute de suite.

All the trainers I worked for were based at Belmont (JP Conway, PG Johnson, J Russell (Ogden Phipps), but they would run horses at Aqueduct during Aqueduct season. I would ride over in the van with the horses.

"Miller’s Crossing was great."

VERY underrated movie. Great writing and acting all around. The under-lying homosexual related points in the plot were hard to pick-up the first few times I saw it (but maybe that was just me).
