One type of cinnamon is controlled. What the Europeans control is cassia cinnamon, not true cinnamon. The two are cousins but have at least one significant difference. Cassia can contain high levels of the blood thinner coumarin which I suppose could pose a problem if you are taking a blood thinning medicine.
Cassia is the most common cinnamon in use in the United States but never was in Europe. Cassia has a stronger flavor than true cinnamon.
