Are there not dead-man latches like in hotels?

I guess it would not have helped since he entered the room while she was out.

Only works if you are in the room and nobody is in there already.

When I’m staying in a hotel or motel I have a habit of checking every nook and cranny (including balconies) before going to bed. I guess not everybody does that.

Are there not dead-man latches like in hotels? The story said he entered and waited for her to return, so the dead-man latch wouldn't help because she wasn't in the room to lock it.

According to the story, he had a master key and let himself in and hid on the balcony until she came in.

Are there not dead-man latches like in hotels? But you can only lock them from inside. He apparently waited inside for her to return to the cabin.
