Horrific injuries of female guest raped, beaten, almost thrown overboard on Holland America cruise

A female guest who was raped, brutally beaten and strangled unconscious on a Holland America ship by a crew member is suing the cruise company.

A civil lawsuit was filed on Friday in a Seattle district court on behalf of Jane Doe who was almost thrown overboard by her rapist during the fight for her life on Valentine's Day last year on MS Nieuw Amsterdam. Room service attendant Ketut Pujayasa used his company-issued, master key to enter the cabin of Jane Doe, then 31, where he was able to lurk on her balcony for several hours until she returned.

I went over to Europe for the summer on a Holland American line cruiser when I was a teenager, back in the 1950s. That particular boat was loaded with young people, and crewed and served by Indonesians.

There were no such problems like this one. The Indonesians did a great job, kind of like having a hundred Jeeves. And they served Heineken’s beer at the bar and at dinner—my first taste of anything beyond Pabst or Bud. Altogether, it was a great experience.

I’m sorry to hear about this business. Very sad, and it certainly won’t do any good for the line’s reputation.

Had to look that one up. Definitely fitting considering what he wanted to do to his victim.

The cruise lines prefer third world trash for the more menial jobs.

So how many Americans would take a job working 12 or more hours per day, seven days a week, for months on end? And as for the staff, they get twice the money or more than they can earn at home.

Good catch. I suspect this nudist cruise put the ship’s staff into discrete mode, which might explain the slow, ineffectual security response. It’s not relevant to the attack, but she’s married, and travels on a nudist cruise with friends, and without husband..during Valentine’s day week? She was liking for some side action I suspect.

Can’t believe this guy thought he was gonna be able to get away with it.

Apparently he didn't. After his escape from the cabin he told another crew member who immediately turned him in.

The princess line(registry Bermuda) has never let me down. Another thing to consider, several cruise lines could be owned by the same parent company. For example P&O lines owns princess, carnival and several others.

Not only the cruise lines prefer them. B. Obama's administration is fighting tooth and nail (and so would Jeb B's) to keep them in this country and bring in more, whether legal immigrants and illegal aliens.

Look at Columbus, Ohio and Minnesota with their darling Somalis, many of whom repay this country with support for ISIS and child rapes. Yet there are no demonstrations against the danger they pose.

Are Americans even allowed to apply for jobs on a cruise ship? This is a serious question. The cruise I was on went from Seattle to ports of call in Alaska. It was hard to believe that a cruise from one part of America to another had no Americans on the crew.

I've been on Holland American and Royal Caribbean. I've seen U.S. crew members working with the kids activities or as performers but that's about it.

But look at the life of the average member of the ship's hotel staff. They work 12 to 14 hours a day, seven days a week, for three or four or six months at a time. They make most of their money from passenger gratuities which means that on a good cruise the room stewards or head waiters might clear $500 or $600. Other staff make a lot less. How many U.S. citizens would take that kind of job on? While in Indonesia or the Caribbean a salary like that keeps a family in comfortable circumstances. That's why a lot of these crewmembers have been with the line for years. They do their six month tour, get a couple of months off, and then sign on for another tour. It's good money for them.

When I’m staying in a hotel or motel I have a habit of checking every nook and cranny (including balconies) before going to bed. I guess not everybody does that.

Yes. My niece just finished a three year contract with Carnival and worked multiple ships. The people who interact directly with passengers, such as the people who run activities or look after the kids (my niece's job)are often Americans or from other western countries. The restaurant and cleaning staff are basically always from poor countries.

This website will give you an overview of what's been happening lately on various cruise ships:

Events at Sea - 2015

The table below lists "events at sea" occurring after January 1, 2015, including cruise ship accidents.  It is based on media reports, passenger reports posted at on-line boards and discussion groups, and reports sent to Cruise Junkie. In reviewing the information, please keep in mind that some cruise lines are given less scrutiny by the media than others, and it is not uncommon for events to not appear in the media.  This information reflects only that which has made it into the public domain.

I would think you may be safer on the smaller ships that only have 100-200 passengers. Theses tend to be the higher end cruise lines. Search the web for the best rated small cruise lines.

Almost all the big cruise ships fly either Panama Flag, or some other flag of convenience.
I do not think one is safer than the other.

There was a congregation of passengers outside the door while she was screaming for 45 minutes...and no one thought to kick the door in?

Sad to say, but if it was a nude cruise, maybe they thought the screaming was "the throes of passion" for the first little while. Also, he knocked her out initially—who knows how long she was out. Thank God she came to enough to help save her own life. I hope that will be her last walk on the wild side.

would you have more confidence in a Norwegian-flagged ship over one flagged in, say, Panama?

All the Scandanavian countries now have a huge muslim underclass to do the work Scandanavians won't do.
