Elementary School Kitchen Manager Fired for Giving Students Without Money Free Lunch
KFOR ^ | 6/2

A married mother of two was fired from her job as the kitchen manager at an elementary school in Colorado for giving lunches to students who didn’t have money, CBS Denver reports.

Della Curry was the manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School near Aurora. She told CBS Denver that she would see students — who often times weren’t signed up for free lunch programs — crying because of hunger and no lunch money.

“I had a first grader in front of me, crying because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch,” Curry told CBS. “Yes, I gave her lunch.”

Typically, students who don’t have lunch and don’t qualify for free or reduced lunch receive one slice of cheese on a hamburger bun, and a small milk. Believing that meal not sufficient, Curry often bought the students lunch with money from her own pocket, she said.

To qualify for free lunch, a family of four needs to have an income of around $31,000. Curry said many students she helped did not qualify for that program. Parents stepped up in Curry’s defense, saying she often helped when students forgot their lunch money.

The school district claims it followed policy in firing her. Anyone who has ever been terminated — like Curry — directly violated policy, the district said.

It is shocking to some people. I had the experience myself many times and frankly it builds character. It doesn’t really hurt anybody unless the kid doesn’t eat other meals either. Kids are at school after all. There are many lessons to be learned other than just the academics.

And I repeat, the kids are offered a cheese sandwich and milk. When kids bring their lunch there is a vast difference between what one will get and what another will get. Welcome to life. Lots of people have more than you have. Live with it. My parents were very young and poor (especially by today’s standards) when I was little. So? I learned to respect the property and fortunes of others without resenting it. There were those who had more and those who had less. That’s what living in a capitalist society is like. Consider the alternative.

My aunt was a school cook.

She would bring food she had cooked at home to supplement the kids' lunch.

Guess she would be fired today.

Agreed. I grew up Poor. Took a sack Lunch and then I got my first lunch Box with a Thermos that I dropped and broke more times than I care to remember. LOL

Once a week I got Money from my Mom to spend in the Cafeteria. Big thrill. For some reason, I remember really liking those Big Dinner Rolls with melted Butter, yum.

I have to tell you, most of US here were very fortunate growing up in a Sane Country. It’s all over but the crying.

***** “When I was in high school my Dad would give us our lunch money at the beginning of the week. Mine was often gone before lunch on Monday. I had a very good friend who would share sometimes. Otherwise I just skipped lunch. Big deal.”****

I myself skipped many meals when I was younger, but no-one got Fired if they gave me an apple, sandwich or a smile.

TT

PS I was never given Lunch money by my parents... EVER, not only that I bought and paid for my own Clothes from the age of 8. I have been self sufficient and have supported others since the early 60’s (EX thought I had been raised by Wolves, now my kids are naming their kids after me... sucks to be my EX)

“The parents who sent their child to school without lunch or lunch money ought to be investigated/charged for/with child neglect!”

Maybe they could be “investigated” to see if they need a little help and are too proud to ask. There are those people too. Oliver Twist wasn’t an instruction manual. Everything doesn’t need to be a crime.

Parents who have the income to pay should be billed monthly. If they fall severely behind they should be notified that the school will start debt collection procedures against them. But no child should go without food because the lunch account is in arrears.

Fraud is a major problem with the National School Lunch Program. You would think the kitchen management company would be more concerned with that then somebody not throwing away a $2.80 lunch instead of giving it to a student. Plus I bet most of those lunches given away by her probably would have been paid for at some point.

“The problem is irresponsible parents not giving their kids...a sack lunch”

And the Mooch SS will confiscate it, berate the child for any unapproved of items, and shame the parents with viscious letters of disapproval. This country is way past its better days. Going into communist darkness now.

Having a sandwich choice when the account is in arrears is one thing. Throwing away an already dished out hot lunch and giving them a piss poor excuse for a sandwich (that is added to the account) in order to humiliate a child so his parents will pay is another.

So you guys favor a policy of giving student free lunches? Who’s going to pay for it?

And what if the hungry kids had hypoglycemia? They would eventually pass out from lack of food. I see 50% or more of school lunches ending up in the garbage can, untouched. Why can’t these poor hungry kids have some food? Firing this lady for kindness is the epitome of libtard P.C. crap.
