My first exposure to this was in the Nineties when an extremist environmental group falsely accused our client of destroying a forest (they didn’t and it wasn’t). They flew in a Rent-a-Mob phony protest group from San Francisco (lots of long-haired hippy types who hadn’t taken a bath for a while), complete with professional video camera crew and director to film it all. This is back in the days of “Butterfly” and her friends.
Turned out later it was all an end-of-the-year international fundraising stunt for the group, who needed a new “cause” on which to raise money. This according to an under-cover policeman who had infiltrated the group. The police were concerned the groups was going to become violent, so had one of their undercover folks join up.
