I just saw a Twitter post quoting Microsoft confirming it.

Thanks for the news.

That makes sense.

I tried to download the install CD from their site 3 times on my wife’s Windows 7 machine and 3 times toward the end of the download it quit.

Finally watched it until the end and got some message that I was not allowed to download that software. (her machine is probably a “genuine Microsoft certified software only” setup.

I downloaded it previously from that site to the hard drive on my Linux box, perfect download. Forgot I only had a CD drive on the Linux box and it required a DVD for the disc. Later when the download to my wife’s Windows machine failed I remembered to use a USB flash drive and from that to my wife’s Windows 7 machine. That PC easily burned the ISO disc. I used that DVD ISO to attempt the recovery again and then finally reinstalled the OS. After that I worked out the bad driver issues by using the Dell Service website. Had no real problems getting that all working.

This is not my first rodeo, have been installing OSs for many years. Am very good at removal of malware too. Very few times I can remember not being able to fix that stuff. But this one was a disaster. It was self induced by the previous (original) owner of the PC, they installed some of the worst fraud based “malware removal” software. The hold hostage crap.

I’m sure that I could get the original install disc form Dell, have family member that works for them. That is probably the cheapest fix, but I am not fond of the bundling that they do either.

Thanks again for your explanation.

Win95 also ran over DOS, Win98 was the first that the GUI was integrated.

Did you try that option (F10 during POST)?

I probably did, but it has been a while since I did that. I was able to get into the mode to put it in original factory software condition, but it locked up at some point in the process. Also had issues with the USB mouse at the time.

My son was in the hospital from Nov 26-Jan 2. He had respiratory failure and was on a ventilator for 3 weeks. Then he was in physical rehab for 10 days, before he demanded we bring him home. I attempted the computer restore after my malware cleanup failed. It was probably some time back in February. It has been only recently that he has been able to walk some without the walker. He has not recovered the hand dexterity to operate a keyboard. Limited feeling in his fingers and toes. But he is healing. He is almost 40, had pneumonia, plural effusion, mild heart attack, bacterial infection in his blood and terrible edema in hands, legs & feet. But we still have him.

For a time I used Stalman’s EMACS editor that thinks it is an OS. (I don’t like bloatware)

Yes, he is pure pinko. And I am an old linux user, that still likes linux. I am not a Stalman fan.

You all are forgetting about Windows NT 3.1 which came out in 1993. Ran on MIPS, Alpha and Intel and was most certainly not dependent on DOS.

I think I still have a few CDs and the complete set of floppies for the install :)

Never had anything to do with Win 3.1.

Used the slug called Win 3.2

It really sucked.

I started with TrisDOS and NewDOS80 on a Z80 machine in 1982. Many steps since then.

LOL, Lord no I'm not forgetting. I was an early evaluator of NT 3.1, and NT 3.5 -- and I have the CDs around too. :-) They're collector's items.

The NT branch of Windows is what became NT 4.0 (which got corrupted by looking/feeling like the DOS-based Win95. Then NT 5.0 was rebranded as Windows 2000 at the same time that the DOS branch morphed from Win98 into WinME. WinME was the last of the DOS-based Windows -- it was designed to be so godawful that it would kill the DOS-based branch. And it was, and it did.

Meanwhile, NT3.1->3.5->4.0->5.0(2000) started to take off, and with Win-XP (NT 5.1) it reached real acceptance.

So, no, I'm not forgetting NT 3.1 at all... that's what started the NT branch that we celebrate today including Win7, Win8.1, and the new Windows 10.

And Texas Fossil -- the Windows 3.x versions you used were in the DOS branch. Microsoft used the same numbering back in the 3.x era for both the DOS-based and the NT-based branches, which was a poor marketing decision, but such is history.

I'm very curious about "3.2" since neither the DOS nor NT branches had an official release called 3.2. Any more you can tell us about that one?

You have to pay very close attention to the license badge. It will clearly spell out what version of Windows is supported. If it’s a Dell computer, it’s likely an OEM copy of the OS, which is licensed different than an off-the-shelf retail copy you’d buy at a retail store or online. The product key will only work if the copy of the OS is appropriate to the key itself, so any message about not being “eligible for a reinstall” likely came from Dell or a third-party. Microsoft would never issue a message like that.

FWIW, you can buy copies of Win7 Home for dirt cheap now, but I’d understand if you went with something free (i.e. Linux). Either call Dell and get an ISO copy of the OEM OS or call Microsoft to activate. Microsoft support is easy to reach. The problem I’ve found is that once you’re in, don’t let them off the phone until the problem is resolved or your ticket gets lost. This even happens with premier support like I have for my enterprise agreement.

Man alive; it sounds like he needs a reboot! Not as easy for us, but God can heal, and will make all things new for His own. Make this work towards that end, but the grace of God in Christ, who loved us and gave Himself for us. Glory to God.

I will ping others for some encouragement and prayer.

It’s amazing how much God loves us, and what he does for us. He hears us call on him, and he answers. He made us and knows us, each hair on our heads.

In that light, I pray for this man you made me aware of, may he recover and may God shine through him and may people see God’s hand in him.

My first computer (MC6800) came with 256 BYTES of RAM and a programming guide that listed it's machine codes.

Halt and Catch Fire was NOT one of them.

License badge is for Win 7 Home Pro. That is what I downloaded and tried to recover, then installed. That is what the machine had on it, I am pretty sure the original owner did not do an upgrade. She is not capable of that.

It probably was OEM version.

Will contact Microsoft first, see where that goes. Would like a later version of OS if I go with them. If not I’m sure I can get Win 7 Home Pro reinstall disc from Dell. I have established relationship, family member works for them.
