Cate Blanchett has been married for 18 years to Andrew Upton. But on Tuesday the 45-year-old actress dropped a bombshell to Variety when promoting her new movie Carol, in which she plays a bisexual woman. When asked if this was her first turn as a lesbian, the Oscar winner smiled and said, 'On film — or in real life?' When pushed to confirm she's had relationships with women, the mother-of-four said, 'Yes. Many times.'
The Cinderella actress did not offer any more details to reporter Ramin Setoodeh. The star was asked if she could define her character Carol's sexual orientation. 'I never thought about it,' she said. 'I don’t think Carol thought about it.' As far as getting into the role, the Elizabeth star said, 'I read a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period.'
In Carol, the actress plays Carol Aird opposite Rooney Mara's Therese Belivet. Mara is 30-years-old. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith's 1952 book The Price Of Salt, which was considered scandalous at the time. It's about a department-store clerk who dreams of a better life. She then falls for an older, married woman. The tale is set in 1950s New York City. Carol also stars Kyle Chandler as Harge Aird and Sarah Paulson as Abby Gerhard. The director is Todd Haynes.
The film was in development for 15 years. It will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17. Blanchett also read The Private Life: Why We Remain In The Dark by psychoanalyst Josh Cohen. Cate has never before hinted that she could be interested in the same sex. She has four children with her husband Upton. The star is best known for her daring roles such as the incomparable queen in 1998's Elizabeth and Galadriel in 2001's The Lord Of The Rings.

They're phonies. There job is to lie.(not all....just most) What you see is not who they are. They probably don't know who they are, which is why they became actors.
