Which of These "Freaky Fruits" Have You Eaten and How Did They Taste?

Which of these 20 FREAKY FRUITS have you eaten and how did they taste. My inner Andrew Zimmern wants to try them out. The one fruit on the list that I know for sure that I tried is the Pummelo which is like a giant grapefruit and tastes similar to one.

Spanish Lime - in Panama we call them genip - part of the "soapberry" family. Outer husk easily opened and inside is a fleshy fruit with a big pit. Street vendors sell them by the branch. Perfect for long car rides but be sure to open window before spitting out the pit.

The fleshy fruit has a disturbing feel to it. Fleshy is the word everyone uses but I am not big on eating flesh.

Grapples are excellent. If you like the taste of a grape. Its like a really big grape with firm texture of an apple. Wife cant stand them. She says too much of a mind warp.

Checking into a very nice hotel in Kuala Lampur, there was a large sign on the Check-in counter saying “NO DURIANS IN ROOM”. Thinking it must be meaning hooker in Malay, I asked my Singapore associate and he told me about Durians.

Andrew Z. did Durian once and said not only was it the worst smell, it tasted like rotting onions.

Passion fruit on the other hand is tasty, citrusy, sweet and tart.
In Brazil they are known as maricuja and they use the fruit in many deserts. Its seeds have some mild psychoactive properties, that have a calming effect.
Passion fruit grows wild in East Texas, called May-Pop, but is not as good as that in South America.

All of the following are readily grown here on the Big Island, all good, and mangosteen, purple sweet potato, and star apple outstanding.

Rambutan, durian and Mangosteen. The first two I don't care if I never eat again, but I really would like to have some fresh mangosteens. Canned ones just aren't the same, and the imported ones in the Asian food stores are all dried out.

I tried I think sweetsop and jackfruit but we called it “fruita de conge” and “Jaca” in Brasil. I’ve not seen it elsewhere. If that was “fruita de conge” it’s a sugary pulp and they make a milkshake out of it at the kiosks that tastes out of this world. My friend told me as school girls they would sneak out at night to pick jacas out of nearby trees and eat them with a bunch of friends in their dorm.

We were in Thailand last year and a fresh fruit bowel brought to our room every evening.

You poor sod. Remind me not to partake of Thai fruit if I ever visit there.
