A woman who went missing during a half-marathon claims to have survived by covering herself in dirt and drinking her own breast milk after being lost for 24 hours.
Susan OBrien, 29, took a wrong turn during a 12.5 mile fun-run through Rimutaka Forest Park in Wellington, New Zealand, and found herself alone as a night of high winds and rain closed in.
Dressed only in lightweight running gear, OBrien told media Down Under that she scooped out a hole in the earth to keep warm and fed herself with breast milk to keep her strength up in the cold conditions.
OBrien said: I just kept chucking dirt on top of me and every time I heard something Id just scream help!
"I'm breast-feeding my baby so I had a bit of my milk, which I thought should help me keep going for energy." SUSAN OBRIEN
A search and rescue helicopter eventually spotted OBrien was flown back to her family who were waiting anxiously at search headquarters.
Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Colin Larsen said: She was just standing on the edge of the bank waving at us.
"She obviously looked very relieved, she looked quite cold and tired but certainly very relieved to be taken back to her family." COLIN LARSEN
The mother-of-two had an emotional reunion with her family including husband Daniel, 2-year-old son Jayden and eight-month-old daughter, Meisha, before being taken to hospital for checks.
Her family said in a statement: "As a family we are extremely relieved and thankful that Susan has been found safe and well.
"Susan will be having some much-needed rest over the next couple of days."
24 hours?
Seems to me the energy expended by generating breast milk would outweigh any benefit.
How did a long distance runner have big enough boobs to do it??
Is she going to try to gain someone’s favor in order to get a better apartment?
I thought perpetual motion was unattainable?... So she fed herself using her energy to replace her fuel burn... Lucky she was only out 1 day otherwise a massive fail on this plan.
Not a long time.
24 hours - what a joke. In a forest no less.
“Seems to me the energy expended by generating breast milk would outweigh any benefit.”
It’s not like she can flip the lactation switch and save the energy.

;^)
Good for her but TMI.
Love that!!
Twenty-four whole, entire, total, and complete hours???? That’s, ... well, that’s a whole day. Wow! And at 29 years ... not sure whether that’s astounding because she’s so young or so old, but, it must be astounding cuz this is a nooz story. Once again, just wow!
