Self-driving cars seem likely enough; theres still several tech and legal hurdles to clear, not to mention the question of how much theyll cost, but most experts inside and out of the auto industry see them as inevitable given enough time. Now, Daimlers Freightliner unit wants to push long-haul trucking in the same direction.
Unveiled atop the Hoover Dam, the Freightliner Inspiration Truck is the first semi granted a license in the United States for autonomous driving, for tests on Nevada highways (note the special license plate in the photos below.) Equipped with arrays of cameras and radars, along with extensive software controls, the two Inspiration Trucks built by Freightliner can steer in a lane, maintain speeds and brake without human intervention at highway speeds. It also has to know when to alert the driver to take control; that driver of course has to handle all non-highway duties as well.

There’s still a driver there, responsible for safe operation. Right now it’s just an advanced “cruise control” which makes the truck stay in the lane and maintain safe following distance.
There. Fixed it.
For those who don't get it, the revenue agent is dressed as a law enforcement officer.
lol - and there’s the legal rub. Who is going to accept the legal responsibility WHEN a accident occurs?????
And a big middle finger on the front grill will light up.
What good is it?
It’s good enough to keep a union dues-paying illegal immigrant employed!
Driverless IED. Stupid. Someone fills one of these and programs it to be automatically delivered. Real smart. /s
What does the driver record in his logbook when the truck is doing the driving?
Will truck stop have automated hookers?
Yep ;-)
Gives new meaning to the blue screen of death.
At least they won’t be on meth.
This is one hurdle they need to overcome right now. No one is ready for a completely driverless vehicle on the road. Overtime it will one day be the alert is never needed or that the driver actually caused the wreck so they will then say remove the driver and let the computer handle it.
Also the computers are still working out the bugs...eventually it will be 100% robot and humans won’t be allowed to drive.
It has to have a minder NOW because we’re still adjusting our brains and laws to the coming reality. And no humans can’t read the road faster than a computer, not if they done a half way decent job programming the computer.
So, the trucks then will be controlled by SKYNET and HAL 9000 computers.
LOL
Copy that, Ghost Jockey, err, I mean, 01010111010100101010101001010101010101010. Over.
Dude trains are not fully automated AND THEY RIDE ON RAILS.
Trains aren’t fully automated because they’re fully unionized. And almost every time they crash it’s driver error. Full automation is coming, doesn’t matter how many words you capitalize.
- there are still several tech and legal hurdles to clear
This is really starting to get on my nerves.
