There was a archeological dig that found a letter Pontus Pilate that he wrote to Cesaer discribing Jesus Christ.

He said Jesus Christ continence of simplicity, his hair golden blond, blue eyes...
His completion was lighter than his disciples.

I will have to do more research, but it does help answer the question of why Jesus is often depicted as blue-eyed and fair haired in art.
