A father in Squamish, B.C., says he is outraged with RCMP after an officer scolded his wife for allowing their four-year-old son to play naked in the front yard last week.
On April 19, Ian McIlwaine was waxing his car in the driveway on a sunny day while his sons, Connor, 6, and Tyler, 4, had a water fight with the hose. McIlwaine says Tyler got wet, took off his pants and went back to playing.
"Being that he is only 4 and still truly pure and innocent of the ways of the grown-up world, I figured what the heck — solves having to keep changing his wet pants," McIlwaine wrote on Facebook Monday.
Three days later, McIlwaine says his wife Margita called him in tears after an RCMP officer arrived at the family home because a neighbour had phoned police to complain about Tyler being naked outside. The officer allegedly threatened further action if the child was nude outside again.
McIlwaine, who was in Kelowna, B.C., on business, cut his trip short and returned home.
He says the following day he went to the Squamish RCMP detachment to complain.
McIlwaine says both his children are upset about the police involvement.
He wrote that Connor was crying and told him he "didn't want the police to take him and Tyler away because 'they got naked.'"
"As sad as this was, I was proud of him because he always sticks up for his brother (only Tyler was in the buff)."
Others have chastised the police for being heavy-handed.
"Kids running around naked is part of growing up and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it," Dieter Schwartz Schwinkter wrote on the post.
Meanwhile, police have called the family to apologize, McIlwaine said.
"I have spoken to Mrs. and Mr. McIlwaine, explained that we responded to a complaint from another citizen about their son being out on the street with no clothes on a few days earlier," a statement from Staff Sgt. Brian Cumming said.
"They did not feel this was handled well by the officers responding despite my explanations, and I offered an apology for the fact that they were not happy and felt their son was now afraid of the police."
Come across this issue in Europe a lot. How hard is it to put a pair of drawers on a kid? Really?
Teach your children some modesty. This reflects on stupid parenting more than anything else.
That’s nothing. Here in the pansy US, some lady got the same treatment over letting the kid play outside unattended fully clothed.
Next time, go to the Station and tell the Watch Commander you caught this COP staring and smiling at my Naked 4 yr old while grabbing his crotch, as soon as he saw me he ran over to my wife and began scolding her for letting him run around naked.

Small children frequently used to play naked, or at least, start out clothed and end up taking off their clothing because it either got wet or just because taking off clothing is what small children do. Really, if left to their own devices, they take it off, and you have to keep putting it back onto them.
It’s only in our new, bizarrely sexualized universe that anybody has considered a naked toddler or even 4 year old to be improper or possibly an incitement to rape.
Likewise how hard is it for someone to mind their own damned business?
Well on the bright side the local militarized SWAT team didn’t shop up with a Bearcat APC and commence depoloying stun grenades and shooting the family dog after zip tying and strip searching the whole family in the front lawn. These are obviously dangerous people here. They probably let their children shower naked too.

I agree with you. This is a part of sexualizing children.
They are innocent. They have no sense of shame over their bodies and they have the right to be innocent and shameless.
Babies (and yes, I consider a 4 year old to be a ‘baby’) don’t need to be burdened with adult BS until they have to be.
We saw it in Italy years ago.At the hotel pool a woman walks by with a little girl (maybe 2 or 3 years old) in tow.Naked as a jaybird.It sounded like they were speaking German.
If I hadn't been so tired with 4 children I would have had him cite me and then meet the jerk who called the cops on us in court.
My mother in law worked at the local newspaper and gave me a copy of the log sheet from the police department where my children's "crime" was written up ... "Two juveniles continue to run naked at 545 Oak Street."
Running around naked and peeing on the peonies is normal...well, at least for me it is.... er... I mean was.
About 40 years ago we had a neighbor that everytime their little girl would get outside with the adults back turned she would strip down to naked. lol
Someone would just call the mom and say...hey Bethie is naked again.
It was just funny to everyone. The little girl grew up to be a nice, responsible adult.

Actually, one of my daughters used to do the same thing! She just hated clothing, for some reason. But like Bethie, she’s fine now and goes around fully clothed!
