PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Some companies boast of making beer with spring water from majestic mountains.

They won't be competing in the upcoming Pure Water Brew Challenge, in which an Oregon wastewater treatment operator has asked home brewers to make great-tasting beer from hops, barley, yeast and the key, not-so-secret ingredient: treated sewer water.

I remember the ads for Genesee Beer which showed a pristine waterfall as the source of their brew. In reality the brewery was located in Rochester, New York, someplace downstream from the Eastman Kodak plant.

Hoppy, with hints of barley and hypo.

Rolling Rock was my grandfather’s favorite beer. He was an old-school Democrat, very well-connected in the party. They were always after him to run for office.

One day in 1980 I walked into his kitchen and found him with this sullen, ashen look on his face. Empty green bottles were all over the table. I counted five but there may have been more. I asked him, “Grandpa, what’s wrong?”

He looked at me and said “I’ve come to the conclusion that this Carter guy is screwing up the country so badly, that I have no choice but to vote for Ronald Reagan.”

I’ve drank some “craft” beers that tasted like they were ran through someone’s system, into the urinal, and finally bottled.

I don’t know what piss taste’s like, but some brews would give me a pretty good guess. No thanks.

For the record, all of the earth’s water has been getting recycled for many millions of years. It’s all just processed sewage.
