'IF YOU’RE SO SENSITIVE, LEAVE': AMERICAN INDIAN ACTORS TOLD TO EXIT ADAM SANDLER COMEDY
Breitbart ^ | 4/22/15 | John Nolte

Posted on 04/23/2015 9:39:31 PM PDT by Impala64ssa

Offended by satire, incorrect costuming, and inappropriate feather placement, a group of about a dozen American Indian actors walked off the set of an Adam Sandler comedy Wednesday, according to a report in Indian Country. Apparently, the actors were shocked to learn that Indians would not be inoculated from satire in the “Ridiculous Six” Western spoof, and that a comedy film wasn’t terribly interested in historical accuracy.

Things came to a head when one of the producers told one of the actors, “If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave.” [emphasis added]

Approximately a dozen Native actors and actresses, as well as the Native cultural advisor, left the set of Adam Sandler’s newest film production, The Ridiculous Six, on Wednesday. The actors, who were primarily from the Navajo nation, left the set after the satirical western’s script repeatedly insulted native women and elders and grossly misrepresented Apache culture.

The examples of disrespect included Native women’s names such as Beaver’s Breath and No Bra, an actress portraying an Apache woman squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe, and feathers inappropriately positioned on a teepee.

“When I began doing this film, I had an uneasy feeling inside of me and I felt so conflicted,” she said. “I talked to a former instructor at Dartmouth and he told me to take this as finally experiencing stereotyping first hand. We talked to the producers about our concerns. They just told us, ‘If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave.‘ I was just standing there and got emotional and teary-eyed. I didn’t want to cry but the feeling just came over me.”

The key phrase is “the examples of disrespect.”

Huh?

Wut?

Did they complain about Johnny Depp wearing a pigeon as a hat?

Not long ago, Michelle Obama addressed some Indians, talking about their mistreatment and as always, blaming whitey for alcoholism and other problems the Native Americans have. I suppose now the Indians are another protected class given the right to be offended at everything. Are they going to hire the anarchists from Ferguson to lead them in rioting, burning and looting?

I dunno, some of the comedy examples are really funny, some of it unnecessarily low brow, outright disgusting, but our decadent culture makes many not know the difference. I wondered which of the examples grew the Indian ire. We don’t read from the excerpt that they objected to all of the humor.

I agree with you that considering real comedy, Blazing Saddles is really funny and also that being offended is becoming a full time job, no thanks to Obama for balkanizing every group, issue and opinion he can lay his hands on.

Sounds like a disgusting loser flick. “Beaver Breath”? “No Bra”?

Uproariously funny...no.

I just watched “The Awful Truth” with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Now THAT is funny (and it was made 14 years before I was born). Where are the writers who could write like that?

>> an Apache woman squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe

An indignity not necessarily exclusive to old Mexico.

Actually, when I saw that description, it immediately reminded me of Sen. Squaw Spreading Bull messing the Constitution.

That’s definitely not funny...

Urinating while holding the peace pipe is about as funny as the crucifix in urine “art” or Bill Ayers standing on a US flag.

Not to mention it’s gross.

Now the Halleluja Trail was a very funny movie without being disgusting.

If you want funny see “Comrade X” 1940 with Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr.

The whole thing is a comic send-up of the Russian Communist state, a real hoot!

Fantastic dialog in the last scene of The Awful Truth. It was acted in the most casual and droll manner with Ms Dunne just cooing her lines in the sweetest voice imaginable...had me in stitches:

Jerry Warriner: In a half an hour, we’ll no longer be Mr. and Mrs. Funny, isn’t it.
Lucy Warriner: Yes, it’s funny that everything’s the way it is on account of the way you feel.
Jerry Warriner: Huh?
Lucy Warriner: Well, I mean, if you didn’t feel that way you do, things wouldn’t be the way they are, would they? I mean, things could be the same if things were different.
Jerry Warriner: But things are the way you made them.
Lucy Warriner: Oh, no. No, things are the way you think I made them. I didn’t make them that way at all. Things are just the same as they always were, only, you’re the same as you were, too, so I guess things will never be the same again.

So the Navajo's were offended that the Apache's culture was misrepresented?
That's like me (of German and Russian descent) getting offended when French people are characterized as wimps.

During his travels down the Mississippi River in 1673, Father Jacques Marquette documented the universal respect that the ceremonial “peace pipe” was shown among all native peoples he encountered, even those at war with each other. He claimed that presenting the pipe during battle would halt the fighting. The Illinois people gave Marquette such a pipe as a gift to ensure his safe travel through the interior of the land.[10]

Father Pierre-Jean De Smet gives an account of the calumet ceremony done by the Cheyenne people: “First they give the Great Spirit to smoke, holding the pipe toward the heavens, then toward the sun, the earth and the water, the calumet goes the rounds of the lodge three times; it passes from hand to hand, and every one takes half a dozen puffs.” [11]

In ceremonial usage, the smoke is believed to carry prayers to the attention of the Creator or other powerful spirits. Lakota tradition tells that White Buffalo Calf Woman brought the Chanunpa to the people, and instructed them in its symbolism and ceremonies.

If you sign onto an Adam Sandler movie and expect cultural sensitivity, I feel sorry for you.
