Life Is Hard for Incredibly Handsome Men
New York Magazine ^ | 4/23/2015 | Allison P. Davis

A new study seems to confirm what we'll call the “Kit Harington Effect," which holds that a man's hunkiness may in fact prove an obstacle to his career. Research from the University of Maryland suggests that good-looking men sometimes have difficulty getting jobs in competitive environments, like sales, because they are subconsciously perceived as a threat to those in charge of hiring.

Considering previous research has suggested that handsome men make more money, are perceived as more competent (attractive women, on the other hand, are often seen as less competent), and are more successful in closing big deals, that threat might not be totally imagined.

Even so, sorry it’s hard out there for you hunks. You might not get a job, but take solace that somewhere, Mr. Harington is playing a tiny, beautiful violin in your honor.

Ugly people work harder than me and that’s a fact.

Still, I use my good looks and charm to maximum effect, work 1/2 the hours they do and make more money.

But, that’s due to getting that extra 5 minute advantage ugly people forfeit.

After that, we’re pretty much on an even playing field.

Always show up early, because “Late” is a four letter word and when people demonstrate that nasty habit, I do not love it, another four letter word.

Keep meetings relevant and short. Spending 2 hours with anyone in business is stupid and doesn’t amount to anything more than a quantitative waste of time for everyone.

Quality matters.

Dress for success. I wear simple clothing. Brooks Brothers and Burberry. I look like a million bucks but, I can talk to anyone from the Janitor to the CEO and you never know if the CEO is the one pushing the broom or if the janitor is a relative.(learned that one early in my career)

Gatekeepers are for A-holes. Fact is, receptionists and assistants make more decisions in the course of a day than the CEO, who relies on their input.

Make them your ally.

Don’t objectify anyone in the organization. They are all human beings and deserve our respect, lest we receive their detestation.

Wanna work even harder? Keep pushing the latest features and how wonderful they are. They aren’t.

What is wonderful is the Benefit and Advantages your products and deliver. Focus on that. It is quantifiable, features are not.

Demystify the buying and acquisition process. 95% of people forget this crucial step.

Help them understand what happens after signature, order acceptance and delivery. Their responsibilities and yours.

Lastly, how will they recognize and measure how your offering improves a business process or reduces costs or both.

Get back to them at the appropriate time and confirm expectations against results.

Great! Referrals and recommendations. Get em... Easy money.

Then it’s back to cold calling, looking good and having money for the honey....cuz why else you working?

Pretty much any interviewee perceived by the interviewer as a threat will not be hired.

I’ll post a serious response to this. Flame away.

I am not terribly handsome (too rugged and have a broken nose), but I am reasonably handsome, tall, and extremely athletic. For reference, I’ve been pictured in “men’s fitness” type magazines. (And not in the “before” pictures, either, but action shots of me doing athletic things.)

My wife would not take me seriously as a suitor because she assumed I would run around on her and she did not think she was pretty enough (wrong!).

A lot of girls who thought I was “hot” would not date me (I later found out) because I made them self-conscious about their bodies.

So, I believe this.

I guess that means that being plain or even down right ugly is an advantage.

As an incredibly handsome man I eliminated all these problems and started my own business.

I inspired my beautiful wife to take care of the work thing.

I’m not the least bit burdened by this at all.

I’d like to be though.

Handsome men are also less competitive because we they don't need a big bankroll to get girls.
