VALDOSTA — A military veteran was detained but not charged by Valdosta State University police after she approached a group of protesters on campus who were walking on an American flag and took it from them. Michelle Manhart, an Air Force veteran, said she was not planning to take the flag from the group, but she had heard about the group’s recent campus demonstrations and wanted to take action. “I did not want anything like this, but I got a call from a student who told me that the flag was on the ground, and they were walking on it,” said Manhart. “I was just going over there to pick up the flag off the ground. I don’t know what their cause is, but I went to pick it up because it doesn’t deserve to be on the ground.”

This whole story strikes me as a bit odd.
Valdosta is hardly a liberal enclave. It is about as conservative an area as there is.
Of course on a college campus about anything is possible.

there is so much inbreeding of college officials now that it doesnt matter what part of the country the college is located in. However, this has to raise eyebrows at Moody Air Force Base outside Valdosta and in city and county government.

I applaud her efforts but unless something has changed its not agains’t the law to desecrate the US flag. It makes me sick to see it but I believe these scum have the right to do it.
I support the right to desecrate the US flag, I also support the right to desecrate the Mexican flag, or the Koran or indeed the Bible, if the property is yours it is yours to dispose of as you see fit provided you are on private property.
Now, here are the caveats before I get jumped on, US flag desecration should be treated in precisely the same way as Mexican (or any other flag) desecration is, private property on private land nobody’s business, but if the state is intervening then they need to intervene across the board and arrest the US-flag burners with as much zeal as they would go against someone for instance hanging a noose from a tree or burning a Koran (or posting a YouTube video).
Secondly, and more importantly, if people want to burn the US flag I want to know who they are, I want them to do so publicly and on record so that for ever more we will know them, I want pictures and videos of the event hanging around their necks for the rest of their lives, I want it brought up every time they apply for a job or run for public office. I want them to incriminate themselves publicly, they do society a great service by doing so.
Would anyone know the true nature of that Rachel girl who got run over by a bulldozer in Israel if we didn’t have pictures of her hate-filled face as she burned the American flag? Would we all still be fooled into believing she was just a nice idealistic, all-American teenager?
Isn’t the best service that Jane Fonda ever did her country her being filmed handling the North Vietnamese ack-ack gun? Forever more we could know her real nature.
You want to desecrate the US flag? Go right ahead, and do us all a favour, take plenty of pictures. Don’t let the law stop you expressing your true feelings, we want to know all about them.
The Republic will survive a few burned flags, it won’t survive if the people who want to burn the flag are forced into hiding and then gain public office in later years.

Good point. Bring out a Mexican flag and a “gay pride” flag and set up a stomping demonstrating right next to them.
