A two tour Marine, combat vet, Purple Heart in war, handles an arrest perfectly, and you call it “dumb luck” and him an “unreliable cop”?

Impressive, donna.

Good police work does not depend on dumb luck.

Oh yes it does. Same goes for nearly every profession. Not everything is by the text book in this life.

What would Sgt. Joe Friday have done?

I'm not this issue here.

This story is not about me or what I would do. My comments are based strictly on the officers background and specifically, the circumstances of what was reported in this story.

BTW, great show, but not what the moniker is based on.

Where in the article does it say he's been in combat? He may have been in a clerk that got cut by flying glass.

One thing I do know is that you don't run backwards while someone is chasing you pretending to or actually having a weapon. Maybe he was sick that day in basic

I have a feeling that many here would have a different view if the last scene we saw from that body cam was looking up the barrel of .38 with the perp standing over the offecer and then the flash.

The difference in my situation is that the druggie stopped and then back off at my commands.

The cop stated that the criminal was in his face. That is way too close and then to add to his situation, the cop fell. This cop is very lucky that the criminal didn’t grab the his gun and shoot him with it before backup arrived.

The article says “he did two tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine and he’s a Purple Heart recipient.” If you want to interperet that as “a clerk that got cut by flying glass,” be my guest - but own it as your own call.

Also, I didn’t generalize what he did into an expectation towards other cops. On the other hand, anything that serves to lessen the current cop ROEs of unleashing death the moment any perp so much as twitches is a move in the right direction, IMHO.

What was your situation? You call him a druggie, and nothing seems to have happened.

Was he some homeless guy that made you uncomfortable?

Did you have to tell the cops that you had held him at gunpoint? Did they arrest him for a crime against you?

And he had the presence of mind not to discharge his weapon either intentionally or accidentally...

Seems the cops can’t win on this site today.
They get second guessed no matter what they do.

The guy on scene, in the moment, makes his best call, and it works out with the result he intended. I guess that’s not enough.

Common Myths About The Purple Heart Medal

The PH medal can be awarded to anyone who is hurt in a war zone.
Not true. The PH medal can legally be authorized to only three groups of personnel:

One, those wounded or injured as a direct result of hostile enemy action.

Second, those wounded or injured as a direct result of friendly fire (FF). (Broadly speaking, FF occurs only during a hostile encounter or initiative with, or in response to, an enemy when someone on your side mistakes you for the enemy.) Or when injured by your own non-projectile weapon (bayonet, sword, blunt instrument, etc.) or projectile weapons fire (bullet, explosive device, etc) while engaging, responding to or attacking an enemy.

And third, POWs injured or wounded as a result of individually directed conflict or punishment with their captor in violation of any article of the Geneva Convention Rules of Warfare Concerning the Treatment of Prisoners of War whether or not the captor’s government is a signatory to the Convention.

He just happened to be very lucky that the perp didn’t have a gun or didn’t want to kill him.

Obviously I meant due to enemy action not a dropped plate in the mess hall. He may have been in Force Recon at the tip of the spear for all I know.

I do not want out of control cops killing innocents. I also do not want good cops sacrificing there lives because they're too scared of the consequences for protecting themselves which is what I believe happened here.

If the cop had pulled the trigger no reasonable person could have faulted him.

The cop and I both felt the need to pull our weapon, and neither one of us fired our weapon, but for different reasons.

Yes, the cops were contacted and came out. He was high and angry at me. It is a very long story involving druggie squatters. He did not get arrested because I didn’t let him get close enough to me to do me any harm.

I did not share my story to be cross examined, but to explain that I truly know how it feels to be in a situation in which you are forced to pull your weapon. I hope to never be in that situation again.

I have no idea what this officer did in the Marines nor do you. You are making an assumption not supported by facts. An acquaintance did 4 tours in Iraq, never left the Green Zone and never heard a boom.

I believe that this officer made some bad judgement calls because he was to afraid of the consequences if he didn't make exactly the right call and it very well could have ended in his death.

The only reason he's not dead is the perp didn't have a gun or didn't want to kill him.

No reasonable person, watching that video could fault him for pulling the trigger.

Why would he kill a man that he obviously didn’t need to kill, and merely arrested?

What is with you people?
