Thank you for posting this. My best school friend’s mother was a survivor only because she was a nurse. Her original family had been rounded-up and sent to their death’s. Walter’s father, an American soldier, brought her to California after the war and she started anew.
Walter was an only son and his survivor mother helped mine to deliver me in 1952 at our community hospital. She died in the late 1970s after spending many years quietly helping numerous mothers to bring new life into a world that stole hers. She never spoke to me about it and Walter was reticent to discuss what he knew of her painful history.
And that painful history is playing out yet again for Christians in Africa and the Middle East. It is indeed a sick sick world.
We know an elderly gentleman who is in his 90s. He is Jewish and fought in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. His unit helped liberate Auschwitz. He won’t talk about it hardly at all. It is a very emotional thing for him. When you see things like that, it never leaves you.
