Some people pretend to be tough guys but R. Lee Ermey, a.k.a The Gunny, is the real deal. The U.S. Marine Corps veteran and movie star best known for his role in Full Metal Jacket talked to FOX411 about his new series on Outdoor Channel, "GunnyTime, and why he loves to blow stuff up.

His depiction of the DI in Full Metal Jacket is the closest I’ve ever seen to my DI’s. Right down to the foul language and hands on approach. The Gunny is ok in my book! And as a previous combat engineer, I love to blow stuff up too!
There are few problems in life that cannot be solved by the proper application of high explosives.
Because he used to be a REAL Marine DI before acting.
I’d imagine he was far scarier in real life...
I saw him at the NRA Convention in Charlotte a few years ago. He’s a short, wiry old guy.
The DI with Jack Webb is my all time favorite and was a big influence on me going to the Corps.
The 1956 flik The DI w/Jack Webb was/is best DI flik!!!!!

I recall a documentary on Marine boot camp not long ago. They talked about how the DI’s was no longer allowed to strike the recruits. Gunny was interviewed and he said that if he is able to “put my hands on you” you will remember what I’m teaching you. Pain is a good teacher.
A couple years after boot camp we were preparing for an IG inspection. Me and two others went fishing and were studying while fishing (and drinking). When one of us would get an answer wrong another would hit them with a stick. It didn’t take long to learn what we needed to know.
“No, they were worse - a lot worse!”
Still nothing compared to infantry warfare. That’s why DIs can’t treat recruits like pansies
Full Metal Jacket, great movie that. But I still can’t get past the scene were the recruit shoots Sgt. Hartman (Ermey) dead. Way too contrived.
...
Maybe so, but it’s very memorable and goes along with the theme of teaching boys to be killers.
I watched Full Metal Jacket right after I got out of boot camp. Laughed my butt off with another marine from my boot platoon. We kept saying yeh I remember that.
Was only hit twice by the DI’s. Got yelled at by some women marine captain for swearing. They wanted PC but it didn’t happen haha.
We were told that the inspectors would be asking us questions regarding all sorts of things from chain of command to common knowledge.
As it turns out they didn’t ask us a damn thing.
Love The Gunny.
