She said kanaka, or Native Hawaiians, oppose the project not only because the summit is a sacred cultural site but also because of political and environmental reasons. The project did complete an environmental impact statement and undergo a six-year approval process, dating back to April 2009, but several protesters have questioned the integrity of the approvals. At full build-out, the telescope would be 18 stories tall and cover about 5 acres.
"No matter what the EIS says, you cannot tell us that building this complex, that will be as large as Aloha Stadium . . . will not have an environmental impact on that space," Dukelow said. "To desecrate land that is in such pristine condition as we speak today is something that we cannot support."

Attorneys for the TMT issued a statement Monday afternoon in response to comments made by the Puko'a Council.
"We fully expect the appeals court to uphold Judge Nakamura's previous ruling that TMT is consistent with the purpose of the conservation district use permit at the Mauna Kea Science Reserve," attorney Doug Ing of Watanabe Ing LLC said. "Additionally, we are confident that the courts will also rule in favor of TMT in any appeal of the Board of Land and Natural Resources' consent to the sub-lease. All court decisions made support TMT's full compliance in order to proceed with construction."

It selected Mauna Kea as the site for the observatory over Chile's Cerro Armazones mountain in 2009.

*backs away slowly*
If I call unproven global warming false, I’m considered anti-science
But if I protest building a telescope to study and measure the physics of our universe, because it will desecrate the spirit of a Hawaiian mountain, that’s common sense
Such is the logic of the Left.
Just think how much electricity they could generate up there! Start putting windmills up there! Then the ghia gods will be happy!
That’s Mauna Loa, not Mauna Kea..... ;-)
