Brandon Walmart closing for 6 months, employees given little notice (Closed several stores tonight)

Employees say a Brandon Walmart near Valrico gave them little notice before closing for six months.

“When I drove into the parking lot, it was full. I knew something was not right,” said a Walmart employee who asked that News Channel 8 not identify him. “We have had plumbing problems over the last few years.”

The store closed Monday at 6 p.m. because of the ongoing plumbing issues. The employee News Channel 8 talked with said a sewage backup is the likely culprit.

The issues “require extensive repairs,” Walmart spokesman Amanda Hennenberg said in a statement. The store is located at 1208 E. Brandon Blvd.

Walmart will reopen the store as soon as all the plumbing issues are resolved, Hennenberg said. The closure affects 400 full and part-time employees. Some are being offered jobs at other stores. Others will receive paychecks for two months and then severance payments will kick in.

It seems that Walmart closed several stores tonight, on little or NO notice, for six months for "plumbing repairs". An average of around 400 employees per store laid off. ?????

So far, it's 4-6 stores in different parts of the country, from what I can find on Twitter.

Design flaw or contractor issue?

Since they are built to spec, I’d say engineering glitch. Keel haul the architect.

I don’t buy the “plumbing issues” explanation.

Wow, that’s a busy store. Luckily they are building a Super Walmart a few miles away. LOL

I would suggest a design flaw if it affects this many stores. Hard to believe something like this could happen with all the standardized plans. The evil corporations are usually very good with quality control in all phases.

“I don’t buy the “plumbing issues” explanation”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but these seem to all be stores in/near “Ghetto” areas?

Wild speculation here: Does Walmart know something and are they getting out of the ghetto areas while they can? Summer riots in the ghetto?

Correction, ours is in the high income area and business was good.

I am thinking a makeover to a new concept.

They did a makeover just recently on our Sam’s Club.

I can’t tell you why, but I don’t think that’s the reason. My guess is this plumbing thing is probably legit, odd as it may be.

Agree something fishy here.

There are very thought out and engineered drawings for MeP and continual bldg dept inspections, and every imaginable SOUTHMUD and/ or SJWM inspection, approvals permits, etc. along the way.

It’s gotta be a bs excuse for something else or sabotage at some level.

Something stinks and I’m guessing it’s not the people of WM poop

I was specifically going to ask that question, too. Maybe Walmart knows something is up (not business-related) that could get very ugly?
