I’m looking at getting a bike, a used cb750 to try to learn. A lot of guys ride theirs in on nice days.

It will go to my parent’s place where they have a lot of acreage and dirt road to practice on before taking the classes and seeing about a license assuming I can get the hang of it.

I know an instructor/repair shop owner who is a good fellow and would tell honestly about how I would do.

Nobody actually “dies” at Disney World. They are removed from premises and then pronounced dead.

The crash location is where these guy are at 0:49

The instructor doesn’t have any controls to stop an accident. No HANS device, just a standard shoulder harness.
Open face helmet.

I’m told you can do the exotic car experience and get up to 100 mph. Or you can do a stock car, with better safety devices, and go up to 140 mph

Looking at the picture they should have had safer barriers or something at that location.

what was disney thinking??

Money. This is a major attraction for adults with money to blow. They can drive a super hot sports car on a race track.

I know several people who've done it and speak of it as one of their "bucket list" items. Not for me, however it's their money.

This is just one tragic outcome. There is obviously, no matter how well managed, risk involved with this activity.

Ok...here is some advice from someone who has been riding for 38 years on everything from a dirt bikes to a KZ1300 to a Goldwing.

Your first bike should be an dual sport aka enduro....basically a street legal dirtbike...especially since you mention dirt roads....

I'm sorry but a 750 street bike is simply too big for a novice......you WILL fall down or overshoot a curve...I guarantee it...

It's not dignified....but so what....you can take a curb at 35 and ditch the bike in someones front yard if you needs to (been there done it).

The first season you spend on an enduro will gain you experience that will save your life later.

With an enduro you can ride on trails to practice riding in conditions that you WILL see on the road.....starting with loose dirt, mud, sand, or gravel will simulate hitting oil, anti freeze, or loose gravel on pavement.

And believe me...dirt is A LOT softer than pavement...I know....as I have wrecked a few bikes and been down on pavement more than once...

Also the very fist thing you learn trail riding is that trees dont move when you hit them...you will also learn how to ditch a bike without killing yourself....it WILL happen...

Riding in dirt teaches muscle memory that will save your life later in your riding career...you will instictibly know when your rear tires is getting loose...how to down shift and use engine breaking instead of breaks....and just how much breaking pressure you can use without locking up the rear breaks(skidding) vs front breaking power (undo over the handlebars)

Watch as much moto cross, Formula 1 , and flat track racing you can get your hands on...so you can see how the pros handle a bike at the very limits of their performance envelopes.

Also remember that term “performance envelope”...it's a critical way to remember just what you bike can and cannot do.

Think of it this way.....a dirt bike is like a small jeep...great on rough or loose terrain but not stable at high speeds...

Street bike are like muscle cars...alot of power...stable at higher speeds...but not very good on loose or slippery terrain....

Super bikes are like formula one cars....very fast with huge amounts of horse power and are very stable at higher speeds...but they sacrifice maneuverability at low speeds...and once you cross the threshold of your performance envelope at high speed...you will most likely lose control in a critical handling situation.

Cruiser bikes are killers....#1 there is no such thing as cruising on a bike...when you throw your leg over the seat on a street bike...you are climbing on a pale horse....you are riding death incarnate...DONT EVER FORGET THAT FOR A SECOND....#2 they simply arent nimble enough to be able to react to an emergency situation.

Full dressers are like big fat ‘62 lincolns....they are comfy...solid ans stable....but they also are big and heavy with much smaller performance envelopes than any other type of street bike....I have had a few...and I wouldnt suggest one for anyone but an expert rider...becuase you will eventually hit a patch of oil..or anti freeze...or loose gravel.....and they are truly road pigs...

Most Harleys fall into the cruiser catagory although there are a few street bikes that do handle a bit better...beside they are expensive to maintian, or repair as well...

Choppers and bobbers are like short wheel base hot rods should be avoided until you feel like an expert....they look cool but they dont handle well at all...especially if they have a steep rake...

So for a good learning progression I would suggest a 250 to 450 single cyliner 4 stroke dual sport...aka “thumper” for at least one season if not two....you will know when you out grow the bike...

Next would be and inline 4 or V4 “standard” street bike with no more that 550CC...again for at least one season...

Next would be a standard street bike with no more than 750cc again for at least one season....

After that you should have enough experience to choose a more specialized bike like a smaller super bike of no more than 650 cc (remember F1 car)...

After this you should have at least 4 seasons under your belt and should have the riding instincts to survive on bigger or more specialized bikes.

I say instinct because stuff will happen to you on the road that require reaction times that dont allow for “thought”....you wont have time to think...only react...

Learn what “counter steering” is...you if you know how to do it instinctively it will save you life...

I say this because at higher speeds (over 35 or so) steering is counter intuitive...you bike “steers” by taking your front wheel “out of plane:...meaning that if you want to go left...you cannot steer left....if you steer left you will lean and go to the right...but if you “push” the bars to the left...you lean to the left and turn left...

Also of note...any decent street bike will accelerate 4 times faster than you can decelerate...many people get into crashes by “breaking” right into them....sometimes it better to hit the gas and clear the position before getting hit...rather than mashing the breaks and skidding into the same car.

The most dangerous time on the road is when you are in close proximity to an auto or truck...especially right next to one in a parallel lane.

I have been riding 650 night hawks for around the last decade....I've had three of them and they are bullet proof....they have shaft drive and double front disk breaks....easy maintenance and no worry about breaking a chain and locking up the back wheel doing 65 mph.

A 650 is plenty big for driving around town...fast enough to squirt out of trouble...light enough to handle well...but they are a bit light for highway travel (you get blown around a lot).

Now back to the main reason for riding an enduro as a novice on trails( aside from loose terrain)....

The first thing you lean is that tree's dont move....you instinctively know that if you hit one...you are gonna get hurt....

Do you know what the difference is between trail riding and street riding is?

The “trees” that dont move when YOU hit them...are now in motion all around you.....if you hit a car on the road it wont move any more than a tree would......and you WILL get hurt...

I have some riding rules I have developed from 38 years and I will post them to you later today when I have the time...

Know this...I've lost at least 10 personal friends over the years and every one of them was violating one on my rules... Here's some of my rules....( I will dig my list out later)

#1...if you get hit on a motorcycle it is YOUR FAULT...serious as a heart attack...really...if you are flying an F-15...and a C140 crashed into you....who's fault was that?..which one has the wider perforamance envelope?

#2....There is no such thing as a fender bender on a motor cycle...if you get hit you might lose a leg or flat out die...period.

#3..NEVER rise faster than you can see....many times people crash right into stuff they are going to fast to avoid...SPEED KILLS.

#4...NEVER "cruise"...if you are relaxed then you are in danger...period.

#5...it WILL happen it's only a matter of when...EVERY car will pull out...every child will run out...every dog will chase you....every car will come left of center...every driver will run a red light....every car door will open...and everyone coming up behind you will flat out run you over...

If you are always vigilant, aware , and maintain situational location....you will greatly increae you odds of avoid any of the above.

#6 YOU ARE INVISIBLE...drivers...especially at the begining of riding season...they simply wont "see" you...drivers are often simply thinking "car , truck, bus, car, truck bus".....and when see a bike it doesnt even Click that you even a motor vehicle with the right of way..look right at you...and cut you off.

#7 ALWAYS wear proper riding gear, boots, heavy jeans (at least) a good HEAVY leather jacket, Good gloves, and GOOD full face helmet that still proves parifrial vison and never EVER buy a used helmet...they might simple split wide open if you take a hit to the head...I ware all thus stuff...even when it's hot out....but I will say when it's REALLY hot out....i sometimes go bare head as you can get heat stoke if you helmet doesnt have proper ventalation. (food for thought)

Those guys you see riding in shorts, a t-shirt, and flop flops and "crusing" are idiots and they begging for a severe case of road rash, a fatal head wound, or loosing a finger or two if they have to dump it....and nothing hurts like a big old muffler burn on your inner thigh( been there too...LOL)

If you wouldnt jump out of a moving vehicle with what you are wearing then you arent wearing enough...period.

#8..NEVER make a U turn...go around the block if you have to.

#9 Plan your route to avoid turning left whenever possible.

#10...When it feels hinky...dont do it...you will never know what you avoided by trusting your instincts...I often take an alternative route when the mood hits me...

#11...DANGER is 360...so you better be watching 360 at ALL times....I even watch my mirrors on the free way.

#12...turn your damn head and look...never depend on your mirrors alone as you will eventually miss someone overtaking you or entering your lane brom behind.

#13...adust your mirrors so that you can behind you to the right with your left mirror...and behind you to the left with your right...and turn your damn head too...it only takes a second to take a look over your shoulder.

#14 beware of wild life.....hitting a deer in a car will really screw it up.....hitting a deer on a motorcyle will kill you...even something as small as a racoon can ruin your day badly.

#15..NEVER show off.....remember how many bones Evil knievel broke...it's imply not worth the risk...these idiots stunt riding in traffic are idiots...period.

#16..it's better to pass then ride behind anything....especialy a truck....I'd had a truck throw up a baseball sized rock the ping right off my helmet...if i hadnt had a full face helmet on I might have been knocked right out....not good doing 65....

#17...avoid rain whenever possible.....it gets very slipper especially with frsh rain with all the ioll drops and anti freeze on the road and you only have two tiny contact patches with the road.

#18...Never drink and ride....if you do absolutely have to have a beer...drink no more than two and space them out...

#19...ALWAYS look where you intend to go....and watch far enough ahead to avoid road hazards like potholes, road kill etc...they will be there eventually.

#20....watch for bugs and bees and wasps...EYE PROTECTION IS A MUST....nothing sucks worse than getting stung several times before you can pull over and get your helmet off (been there)"

#21...Dont ride tandom unless you are an expert rider ans fully trust the skills of the person you are riding with as you are now using half your lane.

#22...if you are riding tandom....outside man ALWAYS passes first...never pass together.

#23..if you are riding tandem... and a hazard occurs inside man ALLWAYS drops back and gives the full lane to the outside man...it only takes a tap on the breaks to give your partner the full lane then you can drift in behind him.

Once you ride with someone long enough you already know what they are going to do (rules above)

#24...avoid passengers whenever possible...you are cutting your performance envelope in half and doubleing the weight on the bike.

#25...if you do take a passenger, have a helmet for them or give them your and make damn sure they know how to ride on the back of a bike....you are holding onto the bike...and they are holding onto to you.

#25...TIRES AND BRAKES are the two most important thing on your bike...dont put a dimeinto anything else until you have good tires and breaks.....chrome dodads wont save your like...good tires and brakes will.

#26...inspect your bike before EVERY ride....check for loose bolts...roll the bike and check your tires...try the breaks....etc...I have found loose stuff or something stuck in my tires many times...and there is nothing quite as embarrasing then getting to the end of your driveway and not having any breaks....(DOH...done that too)...eek thud ouch crap!.

#27...ALWAYS have an exit route....even if it's only into the grass....always have that thought in your mind...what if I have to dump it?...where will I go?

Way better to dump it the grass than get hit or run over

#28..it's only a bike...know when to bail if you have to....the bike can be fixed much easier then you can.

#29...if you do have to dump or lay the bike down...FORGET THE BIKE and get the hell off the road FIRST so you dont get run over!!!(even if you have to roll to the curb) I had a friend die this way...he survived the dumping his bike with no injuries... then got hit trying to pick his bike up and was killed instantly.(see rule #6...you are invisible) I know there are more but I cant think of them right now...

I'm not trying to scare you....I dont even know you...but if you are going to ride....you better be fully informed before you do so...riding is fun and very Zen...getting hurt sucks , might cut into your income loss of a limb or dying sucks on steroids. (sorry for the typos...too long to correct...LOL)

Looks like the track is scheduled to be closed in August of this year (Disney is going to build something else there?)

Parking. With the recent expansion to the Magic Kingdom Park, they need the space to park more cars since they increased park capacity by 5-10k people per day (on average). The Speedway was a failed idea in the first place, and letting the Richard Petty folk operate there was a way to recover some of the lost costs, but now they actually need the space.
