Perhaps no other firearm is so closely associated with the Vietnam War or pop culture spin-offs as the M-60 general purpose machine gun.
Portrayals of the M-60 in the hands of American soldiers range from the sublime dignity expressed by the Three Soldiers statue in Washington D.C., to the over-the-top destruction of the fictional town of Hope, Wash., by Sylvester Stallones character John Rambo in the film First Blood.

As with the M-16 the weapon had some initial problems.

The M249 is a better weapon in Battlefield 3.

:: M-60 general purpose machine gun ::
Is it still OK to use the term “machine gun” given today’s political climate?
I would think that the term “fully automatic assault rifle” would be more readily acceptable to the media.

The 240 was a big improvement, imho. The barrel change was/is so much more easier, and other advantages. The M60 just had so many parts[lol, Colt 45 similar] compared to ‘modern’ tools today.

A very poor adaptation of the MG42. It gives up both reliability and rate of fire in exchange for...um...domestic production?

Sweet gun, and sweet Caddy. I had that Caddy in dark blue.
To: bruoz
Except that is isnt. Yep, it is. The development of the M60 was derived from the MG42 and FG42 as the T-44. It also integrated the Johnson machinegun design from the M1941.

No, not really. The operating principals are completely different. The M60 is a modern gas operated weapon, whereas the MG42 was recoil operated (the whole barrel shifts backwards).

Clyde Barrow knew his guns.
