I wouldn’t lump volunteer firefighters in with the ‘government employee’ lot. The volunteers see more live action!
Don’t bet on it. Volunteer fire depts. are not what they used to be. Enormous trainings, and they are paid, because they have to fall under the auspices of the employed to be required to take the programs. Only a dollar an hour but it is onerous.
My son says a truck is sent out with every ambulance to manage the fatties.
Volunteers, not paid crews.
I am a volunteer fireman. I am not paid. Not a dime.
They are required to be paid here, a dollar an hour so they can be told what to do, and to be forced to meet requirements. I assure you that the requirements are keeping away the young recruits.
Yes. We run a truck and an ambulance crew on every EMS call. The heavier a person is, the more likely that they have medical problems that require us.
We now have electric over hydraulic cots rated at 500lbs lift that help lift the patient in and out of the ambulance.
Shame we didn’t have that 25+ yrs ago and them maybe my back wouldn’t ache all the time. Oh well.
Yeah, I’m glad you brought up the strawberries.
One of these days she’s gonna be residing in botox heaven (I understand that is a very warm place w/o A/C)
“The paramedics main function is rendering rudimentary first aid and transporting a patient to the nearest hospital...”
In our community the paramedics are part of the fire department. They arrive with their EMT stuff and the fire truck arrives with them. And we don’t get billed for the service. (We do support it through our real estate taxes...and willingly!)
The firefighters were obviously buying food for the station.
Notice all the gallons of milk?
Why? They have to live there.
Some shifts may be quiet, but some may be 24 straight hours of pure hell.
FFs have to sleep, eat, and shit at the station.
They need to be fed.
I see nothing wrong at all with getting groceries while on the clock. It's clear it isn't one guy buying groceries for himself.
Don't get me started on what some cops do "on the clock". Then this guy might have a beef.
Not here.
Well, Yeah. The real issue’s the number of personnel on scene in a timely manner. With today’s three man engines, you lose the only firefighter on the rig if they deploy with only two people on board and the third’s late in arriving. There’s also an opportunity to do enroute planning that gets lost.
Once over three personnel, it’s not quite as critical. Our paid professional department fills out the minimum structure response by using one or both firefighters from an ambulance. They travel in the ambulance, and have turnouts on the rig if they have to suit up for a fire response received while they’re not in the station. Same thing happens with engine company personnel who happen to be out of quarters on a medical call. They get dressed wherever they happen to be when the call comes in.
I worked ambulances for a while back then. Trying to get a full sized gurney plus patient down a narrow outdoor stairway was no barrel of laughs, either. Stair chairs, and hydraulic lifts... Jeeze, kids these days.
If you’re in a typical city, they’re probably actually being paid from sales tax proceeds. Counties usually suck up most of the property tax revenue. The exception is stand-alone fire districts that show up as an entry on the property tax bill.
Yea like falling through burning roofs and stuff like that.My husband was injured twice on the fire department. Both times he had the last rites of the Catholic Church. He fell off a 3 story building and broke his arm,leg and back.Out for a year with 3 young children and a new house.I had to go to work. Both my son’s are Firefighters and there were 2 injuries just yesterday. We lost a beautiful woman firefighter a few months ago.The life span of a professional firefighter is 10 years after they retire. So don’t worry about the money they will be dead just like all the guys on 911.God forbid they shop for food pulling a 24 hours.
In all professions people fall off sky scrapers, get burned up, blown up, chopped up and ran over etc. The stories are endless. This is not isolated to one profession. Come on now.....
(((((Hugs)))))Hate to watch the news.
Why cant they shop and buy food while off duty and bring in a bag of food when their shift starts?
They have storage and refrigerators at the fire house, no?
Should we be paying government employees to go shopping in government vehicles?
The news? I don’t watch it anymore fatima. It just became too much.
BTW, cute kid ya got there.
