They need to get food for the station and they also need to be available for calls. Alternative would be to hire someone to do the shopping, which would no doubt prove more costly.

I am very glad there aren’t 24/7 emergency calls. :)

I guess I like the fact that they are there to respond to emergencies of whatever nature.

As far as being overpaid? That’s negotiable.

“Tax money being used to drive a firetruck to go shopping for food.”

This disregard for taxpayer money is not limited to this example. Many times I’ve seen city employees leaving their trucks running while doing some repairs - not their money.

i wouldn’t needle firefighters over shaving a few pennies on where they shop or how they got there.

my only complaint would be the same complaint for all public employees.

you can either make better then average money in an extremely stable job and a PRIVATE pension plan or you can make below average pay in an extremely stable job with a PUBLIC pension plan.

can’t have both high pay and guaranteed public pensions

Me sorry.

It will never happen again.

Until next time.

Around here ours are volunteer so shopping isn’t an issue but if there is a meeting at one of the firehouses in the township the rules require that one of the trucks go with them.

That way if there is a call, the truck is there and ready to go and the firemen don’t have to rush to the next town and then go on the call. They may be further away when they start but they aren’t scattered.

The Firemen use their own money for food...and they have to take the truck to be able to quickly respond to fires. They never leave their service area. Cut them a break already

Ha! I bet you are right.

I see the local firefighters shopping for food at Publix and their engine is parked out front and it has never concerned me. They have their radios with them as they shop so they could quickly respond if a call came in.

Where I live (small town), the firefighters are volunteers. They are not paid nor do they receive benefits. They rely on a subscription paid by individual homeowners (voluntary) and various fundraisers including spaghetti dinners and a joint fair with other nearby municipal firefighting companies every year.

Any small town which still has a paid fire company is foolish. I’m not even sure large cities need these paid companies with a firehouse on every corner.

I think he is well known around that town. At least by firefighters.

I LOVE this graph

So if we cut the number of firefighters in half, we could double the number of fires. Useful graph.

I do agree with you about the bloated pensions.

Well they’re generally unionized Democrat voters.
And who can say no to the “safety of the citizens?

“I understand the House Majority Leader once diverted a government charter jet, a large one, to get fresh strawberries.”

Did you mean ‘Speaker of the House’, and she was flying to Kalifornia?

I am amazed they run those big trucks to every call. I’ve heard they do because they may need the jaws of life.

I understand it cost a lot of money to crank up those big trucks.

I guess they do it because if ever needed and they don’t show up, the lawyers will enjoy milking it for everything it’s worth.

The only, I don’t think you could call it an argument, more of a statement, I have made on seeing uniformed firemen shopping for food, was to the effect of:

“Dang, that’s a lot of habañeros (very hot peppers). Are you guys going to eat all of them?”

They assured me they were. Brave men.
