NBC San Diego ^ | Mar 29, 2015 | Samantha Tatro

Posted on 03/29/2015 6:33:47 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A police dog bit an officer during a pursuit early Sunday morning. Shortly after 2:30 a.m., a police officer tried to pull over a driver for a traffic violation, San Diego Police said.

The driver took off and lead officers on a short chase before jumping out of the car and running off near the intersection of Fairmont Avenue at Camino Del Rio North in Kensington.

When the officer ran after him, he was bitten on the hand by his own K9 dog, police said.

The officer was treated and will be okay. The suspect in the pursuit was arrested.

Which one? They didn't say the breed of the K-9, I have heard that the Belgian Malinois can get very excited and difficult to get to release.

I saw this happen on an episode of cops. Those dogs get really wound up. Cop was arresting the suspect and the dog as unleashed on the side barking, cop puts up his hand and issue a command to the dog, and the dog bit his hand.

It didn’t seem like a serious bite, but I was surprised to see that happen.

Maybe the K9 officer bit the cop before the cop could shoot him. Word on the street is that cops are bad about shooting dogs. Could be a case of justifiable self defense. Maybe that is why the K9 officer was not charged and arrested.

Saw something similar happen at a training exhibit where the cop was demonstrating the hold command, where the dog is supposed to circle around the suspect and keep him in place. The cop gave the right command, but the guy playing the suspect was still wearing the padded sleeve used in attack training so the dog reasoned that he’d been given the wrong command, ran across the lot, launched himself into the air, knocked the guy to the ground, then latched onto the sleeve. Funny to watch, but didn’t impress the civic officials all that much.

When we were boys we would hunt with Daddy.

I can remember the first time our dog got caught up in a fence. Daddy immediately told us to stay away. He came up to the dog and first got him calmed down then very very carefully got the dog out.

When they get hung in a fence they basically go crazy and even a very gentle dog will bite out of terror.

These days, most dog officers work them on long leads to try to limit false bites. The cars usually have remote door latches, and when those are used they’ll be free-running and dangerous.
