I have no idea how they do it but I know it takes a lot of calculations to make a good lens.
I once read that Carl Zeiss back in the late 1800s and early 1900s and maybe up until the birth of the computer, used to hire high school teachers for the Summer to do the calculations necessary to design lenses.
I guess computers are responsible for most of this. I do know that Zeiss was one of the first customer for the IBM Univac.
I shoot at 600mm all the time, no problem. Camera and lens stabilizers work.

I have a Russian MTO 1000mm lens which is even longer used on a smaller sensor. It is an F/10 and that means slow shutter speeds. It also makes focusing a bit difficult in dim light.
When I use it in bright light, it can be really sharp.
I was once told by a professional photographer that he owned two Nikons. Why? because one was always being repaired. Great in concept, but they don’t seem to hold up. I’ve owned several that had problems, and won’t buy another.
We just got one today. Too early for a full review. but for you DSLR folks, you should really give one of these superzooms a second look.
My wife is a birder and starting to take photography more seriously. She just entered several pictures in a photo contest at a upcoming birding festival.
We just set the new camera up on a tripod in the living room. I am zooming across the river to an Adirondack chair at my neighbors. (about 200 yards) the top 1/3 of the chair fills the screen.
For less than the cost of a single lens on a DSLR you can have a great all around camera.
