Yeah. My iPhone is excellent.
Before that, my Android phone had GPS capability that was just as good as my old Magellen unit, except that the Google map that the phones use is more up-to-date than the Magellen, and they wanted $85 to download an update to the unit.
I think the stand-alone GPS units are on their way out.
I do not have a smart phone. So, I wanted to have a standalone GPS in my car.
My Garmin and other brand trail units are far more reliable than my Android 4.1 phone with GPS app. The dedicated units simply always work. It is not uncommon for the phone to lock up a few minutes after enabling GPS. Sure, this could conceivably be fixed with software or a different phone model, but these issues are moot for the dedicated GPS units which never fail. While in tricky terrain I am not willing to even depend on the phone as a backup. Instead, I take a real old dedicated unit. BTW, I use free open-source maps on the Garmin. These tend to be updated every couple of months. Same maps can be used on the phone, for that matter.
My Samsung and my LG phones are flawless in the GPS navigation. And in Maps I just say where I want to go and it gives me the option of directions, phone number link and reviews.
Funny, a guy with an iPhone was trying to get walking direction to a nearby Gym. He finally asked me. I pressed one button, said LA Fitness and had the directions. He actually asked what kind of iPhone I have. He looked crestfallen when I said it was an Android.
Funny you should post this today because I had not used my Garmin for a couple of years until today. I was driving by myself to Myrtle Beach from Jacksonville, NC, and did not want to be trying to look at my phone. Even though there is now a bypass around North Myrtle Beach that I had never seen before, it did great getting me to Ocean Boulevard, but had NO idea where the exact location of my hotel was. I had to call my friend who was already at the conference to get me to the exact hotel. If any Freepers have ever been there, you know that there is one hotel after another on that road! After double checking the address I had entered, I realized that I should have put South Ocean Boulevard. Had I done so, it probably would have gotten me there just fine!
my Android phone and a $19.99 bracket that attaches to the dashboard. Waze app works wonderful for verbal directions.
You’re not supposed to be using your phone while you’re driving, so I disagree that GPS units are on their way out. They’re legal to use, your phone isn’t.
