Three of Utah's eight death row inmates have CHOSEN to die by firing squad

It is a macabre choice to make - and almost unique to some inmates on Utah's death row: would you be injected with toxic chemicals, or shot in the heart?

But, amid cries of outrage against the southwestern state bringing death by firing quad back into law, almost half of those due to die that way have picked the punishment themselves.

Ron Lafferty, who slit the throats of his sister-in-law and her baby daughter in 1984, is one of three who has opted to die by the bullet.

Two others in Utah's eight-strong death row have made the same choice, the Los Angeles Times reported - though it is not clear who they are.

The recent change in Utah's execution law revived the firing squad as a back-up method, in case no lethal injection drugs are available

It was outlawed in 2004, before which time inmates such as Lafferty had been able to choose between the two.

One wonders how many citizens have volunteered to fire a rifle...

It is undoubtedly the quickest; which they don’t really deserve.

Truth be told, if it means the end of delays and companies that REFUSE to manufacture the chemical, bring it on. It’ll also be environmentally friendly.

It’s for the best; no more messy ‘accidents’ or ongoing arguments about the ‘humanity’ of the execution.

Good choice guys, now enjoy your very special day.

Personally, I don’t think we should be giving these POS a choice — just kill them. I also don’t think we should give then any more than 30 minutes notice as to when they were going to be executed.

Rightly; I think it should be a firing squad and there should be at least three executions a day. Or more to be honest. It would in fact end up cleaning out the death row cells and it would send a message to the public (mainly to the criminal element) that executions will be carried out more quickly.

Put it on Pay-Per-View. We could pay off the national debt.

The Mormon religion says something about the spilling of blood being required to atone for murder. There’s a good chance that the murderers are Mormon and are choosing a firing squad for this reason.

Actually, it is exactly what they deserve: Death. Reasonably instant and reasonably painless.

This is the maximum penalty allowed by the Law and Constitution in US. Anything more and you're getting into territory forbidden by the Eight Amendment for very good reasons.

An interesting question, and one that deserves some careful thought.

I had the dubious honor of talking to Henry Lee Lucas for about 45 minutes before he was arrested (I worked at the motel he was living in) I had no idea what he’d done but something about that guy literally made my skin crawl.

I have thought about it a lot since then. Yes, I would, provided there was no doubt about guilt, be part of a firing squad.

I think there are two of the eight who have the option, but haven’t chosen the needle or the bullet, yet. They were convicted before the firing squad was taken off the table.

I think they should also be given the choice of dying in the same manner as their victims

It was probably his eyes. Psychopaths have no soul in their eyes.

A lot of murderers have soulless eyes. Charles Manson is utterly creepy, too, for the same reason.

Not all psychopaths are murderers, or even criminals. But they all seem to have those empty eyes.
