Strike that - only the left front fender was recognizable. Those who remember what a Celica looked like back then can make out the taillights.

Thanks for the correction. Like I said it was a long time ago and I was working from memory.
I had forgotten about the loss of the port engine.
Like a lot of air tragedies, the crew almost recovered.
But I can assure you that was a very strong straight line wind associated with that storm.
I DO recall just getting to my departure gate when the STRONG winds blew in from my left to right looking out the gate. I observed the 737 at the gate to the left of ours truly yaw about 1-2 feet. Shortly after the gust front passed it was a hell of a thunderstorm. Then several Delta female flight attendants ran by my gate - my right to left - in the direction towards the crash end of the airport.
Shortly after the storm subsided/ passed and to our left you could see the column of black brown smoke characteristic of a class A/B crash fire.
I do not recall any emergency equipment passing my spot. But that is recollection.
It was some time before reports of the crash came into the terminal.
I should have said (and you noted) THE port engine (lost). I believe all 3 were Rolls-Royce on the L-1011.
