Most misused word? Well, maybe. But for the past six years I’d have to say “unexpected” has dominated all the economic news.

I’m with you. It all looks like regurgitated baby food-and peppers are in everything. Do they feed their babies chipotle peppers? Is everyone in Mexico constantly pooping fire? I call it slop- I’d eat paper first.

How could anyone not like Mexican food?

Mayo in the Netherlands? My Dutch friend can’t stand mayo and won’t eat anything that has it as an ingredient. Overkill I guess.

I thought Menudo was a Mexican boy-band.

Actually they're Puerto Rican, which ruined a joke in a movie where someone is trying to clear them out of a performance because they didn't have their green cards and the promoters could be fined up to a thousand dollars per Menudo.

In New Mexico, I tend to find good Mexican dishes in restaurants that advertise “Mexican and American food.”

From my experience the Mexican food in the USA is better than Mexican food in Mexico. Ditto Chinese food and China.

It’s tailored more to American tastes so that more people here will like it, just the same as American chains overseas tailor their offerings to the countries they’re in. Not everyone is going to like it though, no matter how much effort went into making food that is different more palatable to a certain group of people. That’s just the way it goes. People like what they like. If they don’t, so what? Individual preference. Making it political is really a stretch.

I once ordered a beef burrito and got lengua (tongue) by mistake. Not bad, but I wouldn’t order it again.

OTOH, birra (goat stew) is excellent!

some kid once told me that saying black coffee was racist. I wonder what are you supposed to say, African-American coffee???

I wonder what they call blacks in England and France. 'African Brits'? 'Afri-French'?

That may be part of it, but I’ve eaten in many Mexican restaurants here in CA run by Mexicans from Mexico with lots of Mexicans eating there. The ingredients are better quality and fresher, and the portions are larger. I’m sure there are exceptions though.

They call them blacks, just like 99% of Americans. I don’t recall ever hearing anyone outside of the media or academia say “African-American” in real life conversation.

I forget which news anchor was talking about the murders in France a few weeks ago. The “African American” = black is so ingrained in their heads that they were calling the black thugs that were murdering the jews “African American” islamic immigrants.

There is one story I love recalling every chance I get. When I was attending college in Fresno we had an African who was a naturalized citizen who ran for president of the African American Student Club. Problem was, he was a white African, born and raised on African soil. His family had been in SA for generations while the black students could not even find Africa on a map.

So, maybe we will have to start ordering African American coffee. Or rewrite Henry Ford’s quip, “You can have it in any color you like as long as it’s African American.”

Back in the nineties, I worked in Mexico for about a year and a half, and ate lots of authentic Mexican food. Tried all of the dishes you mention and many more. (Real posole has pig parts in it that even veterinarians don’t know about.) I liked pretty much everything.

Mayonnaise is of the devil.

Or the french... same difference.

I may somewhat dislike making egg yolk emulsion sauces. ;)
