Yes, I like to get some mileage out of the winter season too, but our patio doors let us do a few of those things. What I would like even more than a green house is a garden room that I can walk into through my patio doors, and grow lots of tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, herbs, and lemons without even having to go outdoors. LOL

One good crop for us is winter wheat. Plant it in October, it gives some nice green to look at in the winter, and harvest around the first of June which still allows for an additional crop to be planted and harvested. The large amount of stalks left make a really good contribution to compost.

I like your idea of a garden room right off of the sunporch.

I have been moving my gardens closer and closer to the house as I age. (80 years young.)

The next thing I want is raised beds.

I would also like to hire a student/gardener to assist me this year.

Whom should I call? I can’t pay much.

It ain't real inside indoor arenas. Gotta be muddy for rodeo day. ;)

All my rosemary died, but the thyme is going crazy. I hope to get it out of the small pots in the garden after the rain quits.

Galations 6:9. Don't give up. I gotta maintain good spirits. ;)

Good luck with all the work that goes with a garden.

Sounds like a great set up with those strategically placed pots! We had raised beds at the last house but moved last July onto 10 acres. We have the perfect garden spot behind the barn but we’ve been concentrating on getting a couple of more bedrooms into the basement and I got pregnant again right after we moved so my BIG plans for an enormous garden this year have just fizzled to hoping I get a few tomato plants in the ground. Ha! We don’t plan on moving ever again so I suppose the garden can wait one more year or maybe we can get it ready for a good late summer/fall garden. I’m just still so happy to not be in the last house that I will be patient! We can’t have it all at once. Baby steps.

Not much to report from the Far Left Coast today. Did get 14 new Dahlias planted Wednesday & Thursday for Lady Bender. Grandson is coming over tomorrow to start my weed-eater so I can cut down the Vetch cover corp Monday or Tuesday. He will also put Black Gold potting soil in the 10 large planters in the new green house. May rain tomorrow and Sunday~

Do you have an FFA club at the local high school? If so their sponsor might know someone that would be good. Also check with your county extension agent, for any 4-H members who might be good workers.

You will be able to do a lot with 10 acres. I wish we had a little more area for nut trees, fruit trees, and berry bushes.

After you cut down the vetch, do you turn in under/till the area? How long do you wait to plant after that?

I hope some one can give you some tips. I myself have never grown them. Have you done a search to see what the University Extension Service has on line for your state?

Somebody on this thread sent me this link a good while back:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd9mNKuRtSE

The cost is about $150.

Last year, I built a “hoop house” with electrical conduit pipe/brackets on my raised bed. The pipe provided the structure for me to put up bird netting to keep the crows out of my tomatoes. One of these days, if I don’t build the Texas Prepper greenhouse, I’m going to get greenhouse plastic to put over my hoop house and make myself something I can start plants in early and perhaps keep plants going later in the year.

The 18-20” of snow we’ve had on the ground for weeks in Connecticut finally started to melt this week and I got a brief look at my garden beds peeking out. But the snow is again falling here for the start of Spring.

Got my tomatoes started inside yesterday anyway. Eventually it will stop snowing. PLanting my eggplant today. Grew a Cambodian eggplant last year - best tasting eggplant ever. Going to put more of that in this year. Got to get my ground cherries going to. Took them forever to germinate last year. Then my youngest ate most of them :-)

I rake it off and put it on the compost pile and spade in the roots with the nitrogen nodules attached. Our soil is too cool to decompose the plant itself.

O.K., just half a slacker~~~~:) I forgot to mention that I also planted green and gold beans~~kinda close to peas.
Hope your snow melt’s soon. (Wish our mountains had your snow!!)

A bud grew hops one year. It really does want cooler weather, so Texas is probably a bad place to grow it.

He treated it like asparagus, and it did well enough... until the hot temps hit, then, forget it.

It does want cooler temps. Especially at night.

I wish I were growing them this year.

But now that it's not raining, I gotta go check the asparagus.

I just wondered. Sometimes I turn it in, and sometimes I pull it out and throw it on the compost heap, but wasn’t sure what was best.
