Working Strategies: Complete this sentence: 'My job is a tool for ... '

Last week I had the opportunity to interact with the listeners of a daily radio program when I was a guest on "MPR News with Kerri Miller" Our topic for the hour was "My Job is a Tool for ... " with the challenge to listeners to complete the sentence with the reasons why they work. The question itself is rooted in a principle I use as a bedrock for my career counseling practice, which is that jobs aren't -- or shouldn't be -- ends in themselves, but are tools that help us achieve goals we hold.

Over the years, I've learned that saying "My job is a tool" forces the question, "A tool for what?" Which leads to, "What do I need my job to do for me?" As a career counselor, I've seen that when clients answer those questions, we are more likely to find solutions to their work issues that will fit their actual needs, both short- and long-term.

Asking this question also keeps the concept of "job" in its appropriate place in each person's life. In my worldview, you don't rearrange life goals to suit the job. Rather, you choose the job that fits your goals. If this sounds pie-in-the-sky or like something that's only done by very privileged workers, think about how ordinary people do this all the time.

I read this and my takeaway was ‘manipulation’.

The question is not honest if it only expects answers from those that actually ‘work’ in the private sector for a living.

If someone has more time than I, it would be entertaining to type up a list of answers for LIBS in public sector jobs (including education) and the contra (”My NOT having a job is a tool for...”).

I work 2 jobs.

My day job in IT pays my bills and gives me the satisfaction of using my mind to work in complex and challenging environment.

My night PT job loading trucks and airplanes as a Teamster pays my Cadillac health insurance plan and pension(9 years into plan. 100 dollars a month for every year worked). PT gig pays the gasoline, beer and fun money bill. Also gives me a daily physical workout to keep in great shape for a 56 year old guy.
