PHILIP LABONTE: ERIC GARNER Was Killed By The Government, Not The Police

ALL THAT REMAINS frontman Philip Labonte says that the "tax laws," not the police, were responsible for the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who was stopped for selling loose cigarettes in New York City and placed in an apparent chokehold by a white police officer.

Labonte recently made headlines in the rock media when he suggested that the obstacles faced by the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) community do not equal those experienced by the black community. Asked by Radio.com to clarify his comments, the singer said: "I think it was pretty clear. African-Americans have had a shit deal. You look at the prison system, I think black people [outnumber white people] six to one. You had slavery, you had Jim Crow, and now you've got— and this is something that [American politician] Rand Paul says — you have a racial outcome."

If it hadn’t been for the tax laws, Garner would not have been selling cigarettes in the first place.

This whole Eric Garner situation brings to mind one of my favorite quotes from Atlas Shrugged:

"Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens?"

Dr. Ferris in the above line could easily be replaced with Obama, Eric Holder or DeBlasio...

Any law worth passing is worth killing someone over. Legislators take note.

As right as you are, what line of work would he have taken up?

The skills required to sell loose cigarettes are minimal, but the earnings are higher than other low skill jobs because the activity is illegal and there are risks.

This is a big problem. Jobs with even moderate pay require skills many workers do not have.

Everyone said that when the libs taxed ciggs to the moon, they would go on the black market because poor people, the population with the majority of smokers, could not afford the punitive taxes.
