what were cats doing that was so important? Dogs helped us take territory. Cats demand that we keep and maintain it for them. Maybe with some fluffy pillows and yarn lying around.

I am myself more a cat than dog person but regarding human household cats are a kind of broom parasites these days.
They were probably of some use to counter rodents at the time but today they are mostly fellow travellers.
