I never understood the “nation of immigrants” line. At any point in time since the founding, I’m pretty sure most Americans were born in the USA (or what would become the USA). That I have an ancestor or two that was an immigrant doesn’t transfer to me in any way - I’m not an immigrant.
Sorry, but we are a nation of immigrants. Who was here 500 years ago? Indians. Thats it. Then people came from all over the world to the new world. From 1860 to 1920, at any given time an average of 14% of the population was foreign born. Thats a huge number.
And no, you may not be an immigrant, but someone in your lineage was. And I’m the proud son of an immigrant. He (my father) came to the United States with nothing, not even speaking English, and built a solid middle class life. Just like millions upon millions of others.
Exactly. I’m actually sick of that.
It’s also promulgated by the conservatives like Hannity (endlessly about Irish this and that, which I also get sick of) when they defend themselves. “We all came here from somewhere else”? What does that mean? No, we did not! We’ve been here a long time!
And then the PC line extra: “...except the ‘native’ Americans”. Another phrase I hate.
Only 8 of the 56 men that signed the Declaration of Independence were foreign born.
