The 10 most useless graduate degrees

In many fields, graduate degrees offer distinct benefits for your extra years in school.

Employees armed with a graduate education are often a more attractive hire and can make a higher salary than colleagues who have only a bachelor's degree.

However, for some industries the benefits of going to graduate school are comparatively low and don't justify the extra investment.

Using the recent "Hard Times" report from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce, we examined salary and unemployment data of experienced college graduates and experienced holders of graduate degrees. These are workers whose ages range from 35 to 54.

For roughly 50 fields, we calculated how much more money a graduate degree would bring and the difference in unemployment rates for those with a post-college degree. These figures were then combined to determine which graduate degrees were the most "useless" — basically, which give you the smallest boost in salary and employment.

Heard the story about the engineer that died and went to heaven only to be told by St Peter that he couldn’t find his name in the book and therefore could not enter? The engineer insisted that it must be some mistake, but St Peter’s hands were tied and told him he would have to wait in hell until they could sort it out.
The engineer went down to hell and of course was completely uncomfortable. It was hot and the air pollution was horrible and it stank from all the sulfur and brimstone. There were people up to their necks in sewage.
So the engineer got to work. He configured an HVAC system, air purifiers and a really effective sanitary sewer system and water treatment.
Finally St. Peter cleared up the error of the engineer’s name not being in the book and went down to retrieve the engineer. The devil said, “Oh no, you’re not taking him! He just finished getting the place cleaned up and it’s fantastic here now.” St. Peter told the devil if he didn’t hand over the engineer that he would sue the devil. The devil just laughed and said, “Sue me? Where are YOU going to find a lawyer?!”

Your thinking that the study of philosophy is not practical demonstrates a common and flawed misconception.

I have a degree in philosophy and can attest to its practicality.

Logic. The study thereof. Fundamental to the study of philosophy. Also fundamental to analysing and resolving the business problems of he day.

Never have worked in academia, and have never eaten at the public trough. Got my philosophy degree 35 years ago.
