Mysterious tunnel found near Canada sports venue as country on edge after terror attack

A sophisticated tunnel has been discovered near a major sporting venue and a university in Toronto, reports said Monday, with Canada on edge over the threat of possible extremist attacks.

A municipal worker was walking through woods near York University and the Rexall Center last month when he spotted a piece of corrugated metal on the ground, lifted it up and found a passageway, the public broadcaster CBC said.

The tunnel was about 23 feet long and 22.5 meters tall and was lit by an electric generator. The walls and ceilings had been reinforced and tools had been left inside.

Toronto is hosting the Pan American Games in July and the Rexall Center is one of the venues. The facility also hosts major tennis events. …

I presume it is still deemed a tunnel due to the form of construction. The other end of shaft-mine “tunnels” leads to the minerals rather than back out into the open.

And frankly, the possibility exists that this one in Toronto was intended to be dug further, especially considering its location. It does not appear to be a bunker.

I wish the media would stop calling it a tunnel, even the police are calling a chamber.

A tunnel which doesn’t go anywhere is not a tunnel, it’s a hideout and a place to cache stuff.

Exactly. The police are calling it a chamber and the media persists in calling it a tunnel

You wouldn’t call mine shafts tunnels?

Only if they exceed 22 feet in length.

Otherwise it's that OTHER code word:BUNKER.

nah. Elsie has shown her hand. She’s a real geek, like me, before geeks were cool. If Elsie is like me, she went to school with the cast of “Big Bang Theory”, about 30 years ago. (It’s from the original “Zork”, unless I’m mistaken. My memory fails me now and then.)

OK, Elsie, now I’m sure of your origins! Someone set us up the bomb! Geeks rule!

I believe that I read that it was found a month ago.....

So, I would hope they staked it out..

We aren't privy to the whole story...I'd hope anyway.

Well, the temperature in Toronto has just set a record where it has not gone above freezing once in almost a month and in fact for many of those days, the temperature has been near record lows. I would imagine that whoever built that tunnel has been either a February hiatus or perhaps even a winter hiatus.

Wow. I bow to your geekiness. I am not worthy.

My wife (EE) and I (ME) got a Commador 64 for our first Christmas together and spent Christmas Eve staying up until about 2am programming a PET character to bounce off the edges of the screen. No tape or floppy, though, so all our code disappeared when we turned it off. We knew it would happen ahead of time, but stayed up doing it anyway.

(Please see my tagline.)

Hope you have a great week.

Pfft!

I'm just older.

At least you guys got degrees.

I started EE at Purdue when getting out of the Air Force; but soon got a 'good' job working for the Navy that the incentive to continue school evaporated.

I've got 4-5 old 64's out in the barn somewhere. I sure miss having a quick and easy Basic on my newer computers.
