Today marks the 25 year anniversary of Adobe Photoshop being launched and changing the way we see the world. Heres a look at how Photoshop started and how far it has come in the past two-and-a-half decades.
The birth of the software can be traced back to 1987, when developer Thomas Knoll created a simple pixel imaging program called Display. It was able to display grayscale photos on a black-and-white monitor.

I remember installing Photoshop from ONE 3.5 inch floppy disk
no layers...no history no udos..very little of anything but a great start..
Happy Birthday Photoshop!
Thank you!
Just as a trivia aside for fellow visual digital nerds... I rented the movie WESTWORLD last week. The IMDb trivia said that it was the first film to use actual digital video. The effect was the POV of the Yule Bryner Robot. I paid attention to it and it was spot on for low res video pixels. As an old Avid low res (then) to HD digital pro (now), it was cool to see!
Been using it since version 1 ... and I’m still learning stuff about it with each new release.
Have no idea how to use it, it’s on this drive I know because when I click all programs it is listed.
Wife tried to explain it to me once (sigh); guess I am just to old, to stupid, or to stubborn to try to learn it.
Photoshop.
It was the be all, and end all program touted by all the photography magazines, for many years, just like MS-DOS vs. PC-DOS, and you know where that led.
It was almost monopolistic, since the bloody program was never cheap in price, and became more costly, as the version numbers crept along. I did find a no-bells-whistles-zingzinger digital photography processing program, for what became my ‘prosumer’ digital camera. (It was the ditzy blond at the drugstore that ruined a roll of film, that pushed me to the digital photography world.)
Look up tutorials online, take one action at a time, it will come to you.
I'm not an expert, just have a lot of fun with it.
I love Photoshop.
Photoshop is fine, but as an illustrator, I love Manga Studio soo much more. Now I can get the lines I always wanted.
Mikey up to his old tricks. That one cracked me up...lol
Thanks, SS. I owe FR A LOT for the years and I intend to pay up! Thanks for all you do and May God Bless JimRob and all Freepers.
