Back when unleaded gasoline was the norm, there were intersections in New York City where the lead concentration on the ground was higher than would be expected near a lead smelter.

I worked at a gas station during college, at a station that still pumped gas. In the winter people would leave their cars running while I put gas in their car, and there were still clunkers around with the gas cap in the back - not far from the exhaust pipe. I sucked in a lot of fumes during some really cold days, and remember going home at times with a headache and a ‘tingling’ sensation. There was definitely leaded gas around still, but it was probably just carbon monoxide effects.

As an aside, this station was in an inner city neighborhood, and the owner of the station had an ‘attack dog’ to protect the place. The dog was trained to respond to the word “hit”. One time a customer became violent and threatening, and the owner told the dog to “hit”. The dog ran over and pee’ed on the customer's leg. It worked though. The guy just left.
