Study finds health benefits of alcohol exaggerated

The health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption have been exaggerated, according to new research published Wednesday in the British Medical Journal.

"The prevailing message to drinkers has been don't feel guilty about drinking a few glasses of vino after work each night — a regular dose of alcohol is better for you than none at all. But this new research sheds doubt on the belief that alcohol has robust benefits and there is a 'healthy' dose," co-author Emmanuel Stamatakis of the University of Sydney said.

The British and Australian researchers found that previous studies didn't adjust accordingly for factors such as age. They were also skewed because they included former — potentially heavy — drinkers in the category of "non-drinkers."

Once ex-drinkers were removed, "the protective benefits of alcohol for moderate drinkers virtually disappeared and there was little to no protection provided by alcohol consumption at any level," Stamatakis said.

I’ve been drinking since I was, well, a young man.

Never had any trouble with worms or long relationships.

“How so? My scotch doesn’t have much sugar in it.”

The body converts it to sugar.

Thats a myth. Alcohol actually lowers the blood sugar because the liver has to work hard to process it since its a poison.

Its actually the mixes that raise blood sugar or in the case of beer the carbs.

since its a poison.

And you still choose to drink scotch?

Death wish, perhaps? ;-)

Drunkenness from alcohol consumption is actually a sugar high.....or low, depending upon how one looks at it. Stupidity is what I say. Alcohol does nothing but burn the brain, just as other illegal recreational pharmaceuticals do.

On the other hand, those who practice total abstention from alcoholic beverages run the risk of becoming insufferable, humorless scolds.

On this hand, I much prefer being an ‘insufferable-humorless-scold’ than a dead alcoholic! ;-)

Do you also have a death wish?

After a number of years drinking Ever Clear by the quart daily, like my brother, you end up 17 days in the hospital after you fell, with malnutrition, with NO job, NO health ins. And many other health issues. Now deemed a total invalid. Among the issues are congestive heart, Hypokalemia its where he doesn’t absorb or keep his potassium, and several more health issues all booze related.

LeConte Hospital, near Pigeon Forge, TN just brought him back to my sister’s house with out her consent as he lived in a RV in her back yard. It took the ambulance crew of 2 large men to get him up steep stairs, where they dumped him with a walker he can barely use on her loveseat as his bed. No potty, no diapers, no puddle pads. Hospital was supposed to call in the Mobile Crisis Unit and social workers and find him a full time care facility. Didn’t happen. Supposedly TennCare Choices Social Worker will be out today. Which means NOTING will be done for at least another week or two to find him a FULL time care facility.

And WE all get to pay for the cost.

He pays no rent, NO lease, yet she has to give him a 30 day eviction notice. To get to hospital made doctors appointments he will need a ambulance crew there and back.

Sis has Scoliosis and her husband has MD, and their home is not wheelchair friendly or ramp friendly. She works 2 jobs.

I don’t feel sorry for him, he brought this on himself. I feel sorry my sister is the one to have to deal with the mess he’s made of his life due to alcoholism. He could not handle the death of our over protective mother. So he says.

Well We both when through losing both parents, and I’ve lost 2 children and a husband. I didn’t take up BOOZE to solve my grief. I turned to a higher power GOD.

My sister is a 30 year alcoholic, just lost her 2 kids to my mother last month.
I was in court yesterday with my mother and niece, they were witnesses for aa assault and battery on an elderly person against her from when my sis punched my mother in the face last August.
30 YEARS of living HELL.
She is OBSESSED with the whole entire idea of alcohol and will NEVER change.
She’s just left a program and is currently in a half way house.
I have zero expectations that she will survive much longer.
Very Sad.
Not only did she ruin her own life she has just about ruined ours as well.

My drinking provides a health benefit to the people around me, it makes them less annoying.

That is what my brother is doing.

These social workers just keep putting off finding him a home. He is pooping on my sister’s floor. And she has to clean it up.

He weighs 200 lbs, neither of them can lift him if he fell.

He was Illegally Dumped on her loveseat by LeConte Hospital in Sever County, TN. They were supposed to call in the Mobil Crisis Unit and have him placed in a facility that could take care of his medical needs.

Now Sis has to go to chancery court to get a Emergency court order to get him removed from her home. She will do that Tuesday as this is President’s day and they are under bad weather conditions.

With him pooping on her floor she can’t even have her grands over. And he is finding cigs somewhere and is a fire hazard. He can use the walker to get to the RR, but it is so much easier just to poop his pants. He refuses to wear diapers.

We are getting sleet on the other end of TN, Memphis area. They do NOT plow the rural areas at all, not even salt them. So schools are out until roads clear. Both hubby and I had blood work scheduled for today, so DR could have the results when we see him Friday.
