North Korea says its people do not want ‘flashy lights’ after satellite image
UK Daily Mail ^ | February 9, 2015 | Damien Gayle

This was the satellite photo which shamed North Korea by showing how the people of the hermit kingdom endure inky blackness at night. But now the hermit kingdom's propaganda machine has hit back, proclaiming that the stoic workers of the People's Republic have no need for 'flashy lights'. A recent editorial in the Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's tightly leashed newspaper of record, also says the photo represents the future of the U.S. - 'an old superpower that is meeting its sunset'.

The North Korean leadership is ensuring their people can enjoy the Milky Way at night and those pesky lights do not interfere with their circadian rhythm.

Besides, with no pesky light in the refrigerator, you can’t tell there is no food in it.

The real answer here is that they’ve developed a cloak of darkness to hide North Korea during evening hours.

For a real fun thrill, Google-Earth Pyongyang and zoom in.

You will be treated to a sublime vista of post apocalyptic, dreary, pompous desolation that will haunt your dreams!

Darkness at night is a sustainable energy policy.

>> their people can enjoy the Milky Way at night <<

Reminds me of my childhood — before the days of ubiquitous “light pollution” — when even from within a city, you could look up at the sky on a cloudless night and see hundreds of stars beautifully arrayed across the entirety of God’s heavenly firmament. Awe inspiring!

I guess that to have that kind of near-sacred experience today, you need to go either to North Korea or to some deep canyon in the Rocky Mountains.

North Korea could be an amateur astronomer’s mecca.

No light pollution... but there is the problem of the coal smog and air pollution consistent with a communist state to make up for it.

"People's comrades also have no need for light when there is nothing to see. Eyes should be preserved for the good of the State, not wasted on looking at idle things."

How does Dear Leader explain the flashy lights in Pyongyang at night?

Reminds me of a kid from Arlington TX who came up to visit us several years ago. At night he stood out in our driveway looking up and exclaimed...”I have never seen so many stars in all my life!”

Then there was the crew chief on our military plane when we were sent for two weeks to Alaska in the middle of winter.

He spent the two weeks drunk as a skunk, and the night we left he complained about how he had not even seen the Northern Lights.
I said to him, “Well, LOOK UP!”
His next words were..”Well I’ll be d—ned!”

Jimmy Carter said similar things when running for office. Something about wearing sweaters and lowering expectations.

Image has been on the internet for years.

North Korea's internet connection finally finished downloading it?

That is a good point. But if we post a picture of a steak dinner will he say his people don’t want all those trimmings because they distract them from paying homage to dear leader?

I remember nights in Fort Riley, Kansas when we would don our night vision goggles and look up at the sky. There were so many stars (shooting and still) that we were amazed.
