NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Students at the New York Academy of Art are combining art and science in hopes of solving mysteries. They are trying to help police identify people who died in New York but were never identified.
If you walk down Franklin Street in Tribeca and look into the window of the New York Academy of Art you will see faces staring right back at you. These sculptures are not just works of art each head represents a real person, on display here to try to solve a mystery.
New York City police know how these men, women, and children died. Now they want to know who they are. So the New York City Medical Examiner's Office used a 3D printer to create exact replicas of human skulls that DNA and dental records failed to identify. The skulls were given to student artists so they could try to re-create a face someone might recognize even years later.
The academy's John Volk said the replicas may not be exact but are close enough that they could jog someone's memory. It is the first of its kind merging of art, science and police work.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is also part of the project. All parties hope even someone walking down this New York City street could help solve a murder mystery.

The movie. But in the movie it was not done with a 3D printer.
It's been years but I'm going to have to watch that movie again.
It is quite enjoyable, IMO.
