'Project Almanac' entertaining, but time has come and gone for shaky-cam style

If there was never another hand-held, shaky-cam, found-footage style movie, the world would survive quite nicely.

“Project Almanac” is the latest film to employ that gimmicky tactic, which distracts from what is actually a fairly entertaining teen time-travel flick.

Using a cast of unknowns, “Project Almanac” is no heavy-duty science fiction movie. Instead, it simply asks what would happen if a group of mostly likeable kids stumbles across a time machine.

The result is certainly not “Looper” or “Groundhog Day” or “Back to the Future,” but it’s a serviceable entry into the messing-with-space-time genre.

It looks good but it also looks like several other movies I’ve seen over the past several years.

Sort of Chronicle meets Primer. Might be worth a look.

If you've seen Back to the Future, Looper and Groundhog Day, you've seen them all.

I refuse to watch shaky cam movies. I’ve turned off more than a few after 10 minutes because of that sort of crap camera work.

IMO it shows a lack of ability to do real quality work. Freshman in movie school.

In any case, I have plenty to watch, I don’t need to look for, or suffer through, movies that irritate me.

I like the herky-jerky camera work. It soothes my nerves.

Wasn’t there a simply made, black and white movie from seven years ago similar to this one, a parody of slapped together amateur filmmaking? The movie I’m thinking of was about teens in a Haunted House encountering ghosts, not all of the ghosts being that welcoming. It was a huge sleeper hit, that could not be repeated in a part two sequel.

Are you thinking of The Blair Witch Project?

The TV show Firefly had an interesting mix of handheld camera work. On the commentary track Joss Whedon said they used the handheld camera for a lot of the work with the protagonists, but anytime they dealt with the big, bad Alliance they had the camera bolted down rock-steady with absolutely no shakiness just to give a different effect between the leftovers from the rebellion and the winning government.

That’s it! The Blair Witch Project.

This came out during the years I was boycotting any and all movies in the theaters. I had given up on finding something worth seeing. I have since gone back to taking that $13.00 gamble at the Shopping Mall Multi-Plex. There are some good films out there, that will totally take you away from the present for the time being. And you will come back better for the experience, or otherwise deeply effected. The Grand Budapest Hotel was such a movie. I may see it again someday, if on the big screen.

OK.....but for me bourbon works better.

Based on the little complaining I hear about it, I am in the minority.
